Dyeing Easter eggs doesn’t have to mean synthetic dyes and artificial colors. Some of the most beautiful, vibrant shades come straight from foods already in your kitchen!

Many fruits, vegetables, and spices contain natural pigments like anthocyanins (in red cabbage, blueberries) and curcumin (in turmeric). These compounds bind to the eggshell (which is porous!) and create rich, earthy tones—without the chemical additives.

1ļøāƒ£ Start with hard-boiled eggs
Let them cool completely before dyeing.

2ļøāƒ£ Make your natural dye
Choose one ingredient and add it to a pot with about 2 cups of water:
• Yellow → 1–2 tbsp turmeric
• Pink/red → chopped beets or raspberries
• Blue → chopped red cabbage
• Brown/orange → onion skins
• Purple → blueberries

Bring to a boil, then simmer for 15–30 minutes.

3ļøāƒ£ Strain & add vinegar
Strain out the solids and stir in 1–2 tablespoons of white vinegar (this helps the color stick to the shell).

4ļøāƒ£ Soak your eggs
Place eggs in the dye and let them sit:
• 30–60 minutes → soft pastel tones
• Several hours or overnight (in the fridge) → deeper, richer colors

5ļøāƒ£ Dry & enjoy
Gently remove and let dry on a rack or paper towel. For a little shine, rub with a drop of oil.

Sending out a big CONGRATS to Dr. Chad and the SLAM U14 Division 2 Boys Team he coaches. They competed this weekend at Basketball Nova Scotia Provincials, it was a heartbreaking loss of 3 points in the finals and they came home with Silver 🄈

Our community is steeped in youth sports that is run nearly entirely on volunteers. We are so happy to support many of these athletes and the parents/community members that donate their time and skills to organize, lead and coach. It’s heart warming to hear your stories and a privilege to watch the development and growth among youth here in St. Margaret’s Bay.

Great job to all the Basketball Players from SLAM who competed this weekend!
