Having an addicted loved one can create many challenges within family communications and in relationships. Setting boundaries is one of the most effective ways to stop enabling our loved one’s addictions. However, we hear all the time from our clients that they don't know what to say or how to set a boundary that works. Sometimes as family members we feel that a boundary will push away the person we love or damage the relationship. Remember that boundaries are an act of love. In the upcoming 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗻 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁, 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲, you will learn:

✅How and why boundaries can assist you to stop enabling and actually help in the most loving way possible.
✅Words to use and words to lose when setting boundaries with the addict you love.
✅When to set a boundary and what to do if your loved one ignores or rejects your boundary.
✅How boundaries can protect your wellness, reduce stress and help your loved one in their recovery from addiction.

This is an opportunity to put your wellness at the top of the priority list for both you and the addict you love.

In our latest Ask Candace About Addition Recovery, M.S. shares that she has a loved one staying with her, and she asks how she can be more assertive in order to become more emotionally regulated when talking to each other.

It is important to tell him how you feel - Be assertive with “I” statements, for example: I know, I feel, I understand, I need, I believe. Start with those instead of: “You keep doing this to me…”

As we mark World Drug Day today, I hope you’ll take a moment to consider the dynamics in your own household.

Are you helping the addict you love take responsibility for their choices?

Or are you doing things they should be doing for themselves, thereby enabling them to stay stuck in their addiction?

Please see my latest blog post called "World Drug Day 2025: Why Family Support Is Critical in Addiction Recovery," which will help you identify whether your actions are “helping” or “enabling,” and provides action steps for moving toward recovery.

By setting healthy boundaries and getting the right support, you can change the dynamics and open the door to addiction recovery.

What happens when enabling stops?

When you stop enabling your addicted loved one, they can truly become ready to face their own demons, and that is when you, as loved ones, can step in and be helpful.
