This notion of a comprehensive treatment plan to look low maintenance (think makeup free) has some truth to it.

Looking healthy, natural, and well rested is rarely the result of a single treatment or quick fix. What appears so relaxed and effortless is often the cumulative effect of carefully selected cosmetic treatments, consistent skincare, and a holistic wellness plan that evolves over time.

Aging well is not about doing everything at once, or finding one modality that does it all. It is about a customized approach that supports skin health, balance, and longevity.

For many patients, this intentional, evidence-based idea leads to results that look natural and feel sustainable.

Questions from the consult room đŸŽ„

Behind closed doors, certain questions come up repeatedly during patient consultations at H&B. When they do, it’s usually because the answer is more nuanced than a headline or trend suggests.

Recently, several of our patients have asked about estrogen cream and its role in facial skin quality. In this video, Dr. Humphrey shares clinical context, what the research suggests, and where evidence remains limited.

As always, decisions around hormone therapy should be made in collaboration with your primary care or hormone health physician.

Abdominal skin laxity treatment with SculptraÂź + UltherapyÂź

Jillian at the august diaries is sharing an honest look at her postpartum abdominal skin laxity treatment journey with Dr. Katie Beleznay.

Dr. Beleznay developed a personalized treatment plan that incorporated two collagen stimulating treatments: SculptraÂź and UltherapyÂź, with a focus on improving skin quality and resilience over time.

“This wasn’t about weight or ‘bouncing back.’ I don’t want to erase birth or what my body has been through - it’s about skin quality and how that thinner, looser, crepey skin can linger long after weight loss or pregnancy.”

Watch to see Jillian’s results at the three-month mark.

What is “Ozempic face” and how can it be treated?

“Ozempic face” and “Ozempic skin” are terms used to describe facial and skin changes some patients notice while using GLP-1 therapies such as Ozempic or Mounjaro. These changes may include facial volume loss, skin laxity, dullness, or general shifts in contour and overall skin quality.

The reasons behind these changes are often multifactorial. They may relate to the rate and amount of weight loss, changes in fat distribution, nutritional factors, and baseline skin quality, rather than the medication alone.

Our clinical understanding is evolving. Increasingly, we believe that early intervention may be one of the most effective strategies. When patients are beginning their GLP-1 journey, proactive treatment aimed at supporting collagen, elasticity, and structural integrity can help maintain facial balance as weight changes occur. In some patients, this may include injectable collagen biostimulators such as Radiesse or Sculptra, or energy-based lifting and tightening treatments to support tissue firmness before visible descent occurs.

Supporting structure early is often more predictable than attempting to correct more advanced changes later. There is also emerging evidence that certain biostimulatory treatments, particularly calcium-based injectables, may help maintain facial structure when used during periods of weight loss. While research is ongoing, this is an area of aesthetic medicine that continues to develop, and one that Dr. Humphrey is particularly interested in and will continue to share about as best practices evolve. You don’t need to choose between your health goals and your appearance. With informed planning and expert care, many patients can maintain skin vitality and facial harmony throughout their journey.

In aesthetic medicine, treatment decisions are rarely about the procedure alone.

In consultation, what often determines whether a patient moves forward is whether they feel heard. Do they feel understood? Do they feel that their goals have been interpreted accurately and respectfully

Emotional safety in the clinical environment matters. So does trust in the healthcare professional guiding the process. Expertise is essential, but so is clear communication, thoughtful pacing, and the ability to explain not just what can be done, but what should be done.

For many patients, the experience of care shapes their decision as much as the treatment plan itself.

“I’ve never believed in ‘fixing’ my skin.

What I believe in is commitment.

Over a decade of thoughtful, consistent care with Dr. Humphrey has taught me that maintenance—not a quick fix —is the real luxury.

So grateful for bi-annual treatments of IPL - there is a reason that this workhorse treatment has been around for 30 years. It works.” -

Mentorship in cosmetic dermatology

Across years of mentoring dermatologists around the world, Dr. Shannon Humphrey has observed a few qualities that consistently support success. Clarity around goals, a sense of direction, and the ability to connect and communicate effectively matter deeply.

Her approach to mentorship mirrors her approach to patient care. Listening first. Understanding where someone is headed. Supporting their goals rather than imposing an agenda.

Mentorship has shaped the past and present of cosmetic dermatology, and it will continue to shape its future. It is also reciprocal. When mentorship is intentional, both mentor and mentee learn, grow, and move forward with greater confidence and purpose.

March Break often brings changes in routine, environment, and sun exposure.

Whether you’re travelling to a warmer climate, spending time outdoors locally, or navigating wind and cold on the slopes, these shifts can increase cumulative stress on the skin.

Consistent sunscreen use, antioxidant support in the morning, and protecting the skin barrier all play an important role in supporting skin health when schedules are less predictable.

When your routine changes, a focus on the fundamentals can help maintain skin condition and support long-term results.

Let’s talk about eyebrow microblading.

I was recently featured in an article in the New York Post discussing the long-term challenges some patients are now facing with microbladed brows. It’s a timely conversation, and it highlights an important point: brow trends change, often more dramatically than we expect.

Over the years, we’ve moved from pencil-thin brows, to highly structured arches, to today’s fuller, more natural or laminated styles. What feels current now may not feel that way a decade from now.

That’s where microblading can be complicated. While I have seen good outcomes, I have also seen many cases where colour, longevity, and placement become problematic over time. Microblading is not easily undone, and removal is often far more complex, uncomfortable, and unpredictable than many people anticipate.

If you’re considering microblading, do your research carefully. Ask to see a wide range of before and after photos, speak with people who have had the treatment, and understand that this is a long-term decision.

When possible, I encourage patients to start with more temporary options, such as makeup, brow tinting, or treatments that support natural hair growth. These approaches allow flexibility as trends and personal preferences evolve.

Sometimes, choosing the option that can change with you is the most thoughtful approach.

I am who I am because of the women who surround me.

The women at H&B, whose commitment to excellence, care, and integrity shows up every single day. You inspire me more than you know.

My mother, my sister, and my daughters. My foundation and my constant reminder of what matters most.

My circle. The women who challenge me, support me, keep me grounded, and help me grow, both personally and professionally.

My colleagues, collaborators, and Derm sisters. Thought leaders, teachers, and friends who continue to shape and elevate our field.

Today, I’m grateful for the women who lead, mentor, nurture, question, and show up with intention.

Happy International Women’s Day.

These are just a few of the many women who have shaped my life, listed in no particular order.
