In light of World Autism Awareness Day, join us to raise awareness and discover some facts about Autism Spectrum Disorder!

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects many aspects of a person’s life. People with autism may have differences in social interaction and communication, display of repetitive behaviours, routine actions and unique interests. The term “spectrum” does not reflect a linear relationship from “mild” to “severe”, but rather describes how a person with autism functions in each of these areas:
- Executive function
- Sensory processing
- Repetitive behaviours
- Motor skills
- Perseverative thinking
- Social awareness
- Verbal & nonverbal communication
- Information processing

Where can I find more resources/provide support for the neurodivergent community?
1. Autism BC: A small, non-profit and registered charity organization in BC that supports the autistic community by providing support for families, promoting inclusions, and acceptance.
2. Autism Support Network: an organization that educates and supports families in BC about Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) as a treatment for autism, building local networks to help families connect with others in their communities.
3. Autism Canada: Autism Canada has been pioneering in supporting individuals with autism and their community for over 45 years, providing education, and resources to enhance quality of life and advocating for inclusion

Ever noticed how feeling too calm can actually make you anxious? 🌀 Amidst the tranquility, our minds can wander into the depths of uncertainty, conjuring up storms of worry. Sometimes, it's the quiet moments that stir up the loudest thoughts. Living with chronic anxiety can make moments of stillness, peace, calm, or even boredom feel uncomfortable.

Here’s 4 reasons why:

1. You fear getting caught off guard: If you live in a constant state of hypervigilance, your brain may not feel prepared to face potential threats in a calm state. Thus your anxiety is triggered as a way to try and protect you.
2. You fear the calm isn't going to last: You may have learned by past experience or trauma that a calm state never lasts and is always followed by chaos. Being calm now signals to your brain that a storm must be coming, and so you start waiting for the other shoe to drop.
3. Feeling calm feels unfamiliar: When you're used to living in a state of chronic stress and anxiety, feeling calm might feel unfamiliar and therefore threatening to your brain.
4. Feeling calm induces a mini-identity crisis: If you identify deeply with your anxiety and consider it to be a part of who you are, you may feel like you lose a part of yourself when you're calm. This may feel deeply unsettling.

Gentle reminders for the anxious procrastinator:
1. Procrastination is often rooted in fear- what is it that you’re afraid of? Be brave and address those fears head-on
2. Embrace uncertainty- take small action steps, even if things are un clear, and be empowering
3. Find your joy in the process, instead of fixating on the outcome- Progress, not perfection!
4. Self-compassion is a secret weapon for overcoming procrastination- offer yourself the same kindness you’d give to a friend. You’re worth it!
5. Remember, your worth is not dependent on your performance. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just get started!

Breathe in, breathe out. You've got this! Break tasks into small steps, embrace progress over perfection, and remember that self-compassion goes a long way. 💙✨ Procrastination doesn't define you; it's a moment, not a destiny. Take one step at a time and celebrate every small victory. 🚀

November 1st marks International Stress Awareness Day, a day dedicated to shedding light on the impact of stress and the importance of managing it effectively. We are right in the middle of Midterm season and know exactly what stress is! However, it is important to take a break too. Here are a few tips from MHI:
1. Go get that sunlight!
2. Make some time for your friends
3. Make a To-do list (it will give you a sense of accomplishment!)
4. Go for a short walk
5. Say no to things that add more stress to your plate (remember, it is okay to say no!)
So, how do you plan on relaxing today?
