The brain is capable of generating any physical sensation in any part of the body: pain in your back, your neck, your eyes, even your teeth.
Muscle pain, shooting pain, sharp pain, dull pain. Tightness, tingling, burning, numbness. If you’re experiencing an unpleasant sensation somewhere in your body, and your healthcare team has ruled out structural causes, it is quite possible that it’s neuroplastic (reminder neuroplastic refers to the way our brains pick up habits of pain).
Because all pain feels like it’s coming from the body, it can be difficult to distinguish between pain that’s structurally caused and pain that’s neuroplastic. All that we feel is pain in the body that is our only experience either way.
And yes, It is possible that pain that begins due to a structural issue, such as a sprained ankle, could eventually turn into neuroplastic pain.
Pain is complex, and everyone’s story is different.
