My local market haul a few weeks ago ✨

I try to buy one new vegetable and/or fruit from the local market each week - and that week I was fortunate enough to have fava beans make their way into my bag.

This was my first time trying fava beans (late to the party I know). I was pleasantly surprised by their sweet, nutty and refreshingly clean flavour. They are also jam-packed with fibre and protein making them not only nutritious but satiating as well.

Once I shucked from the pod - I boiled them, peeled them from their leathery skin - and added them to salads that week. But they are totally versatile and can be added to pastas, stir-fry, etc.

As the days turn cooler you won’t find fava beans at the local markets but you will still find a bounty of beautiful seasonal produce that will help guarantee you take in a wide variety of nutrients that nourish, satisfy, and promote good health. Plus, it encourages a bit more experimentation with produce in the kitchen.

So, if you have access to local markets within your area - like the - I encourage you to check it out - grab some produce you’ve never tried, do a quick google search to find a recipe that incorporates it and get experimental in the kitchen. As an added bonus - you get to support your local farmers in doing this as well! 👩‍🌾

Okay – who here eats lentils?

I LOVE lentils in all their forms. This pulse is massively underrated – it’s inexpensive, provides an impressive amount of nutrition and is super versatile in cooking. It’s become a staple plant-based option in my pantry.

Lentils have a ton of benefits..here are a few:

🌱 They are packed with fibre. One cup contains a whopping 16 grams of dietary fibre – talk about impressive. It’s also supportive for blood sugar balance.

💩 They help you p**p. Yep – I said it. Lentils are high in both soluble and insoluble fibre – which will do your bowels a world of good. They can help alleviate constipation and promote regularity and a healthy digestive tract.

🌱 They are an excellent source of plant-based protein. A one cup serving provides 18 grams of protein. This, and their high fibre content, will help keep you feeling satiated for longer after your meals.

🌱 You get 6.6mg of iron along with folate to help support healthy red blood cells that help deliver oxygen throughout your body.

🌱 They may help lower cholesterol

Delicious ways to get more lentils into your diet:

🌱 has a recipe for a ginger French lentil stew that’s divine and super easy to make

🌱 Add ½-1 cup of cooked French or black lentils to any salad

🌱 Add cooked red lentils to a curry or stew

🌱 Add 1⁄2 cup (125 mL) of cooked lentils to quesadillas along with other fillings you enjoy

🌱 Add ½ cup of cooked lentils to soups or a stirfry
