You’re Not Alone: Gentle Ways to Care for Yourself During Seasonal Depression

As the days get shorter and the sunlight fades, you might notice feeling more tired, down, or just not yourself. This is more common than you might think and is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or seasonal depression.

When we don’t get enough sunlight, our body makes less serotonin—the chemical that helps us feel good. This affects how we feel physically, emotionally, and even socially. Everything is connected—how we care for our body, mind, and relationships can make a big difference during these darker months.

Here are a few gentle ways to support yourself:

• Body: Try to get outside when the sun is out, even for a little while. Natural light can help lift your mood.
• Mind: Be kind to yourself. Recognize when you’re feeling low and allow yourself to slow down. Simple self-care tools like mindfulness, journaling, or just pausing to breathe can help you reconnect with how you’re feeling.
• Social: Stay connected with people who care about you. Talking with someone—even virtually—can make you feel less alone.

Remember, it’s okay to feel off during this time. You don’t have to go through it alone. If things feel overwhelming, I’m here to help. Therapy offers a safe and supportive space to work through these feelings.
