Today's is about HEAD CONTROL! πΆ
Did you know, babies develop from the top down? π
When it comes to motor development, one of the first things we look for is head control. Head control lays the foundation for future gross motor skills such as rolling, sitting, crawling and walking. πΆββοΈ
We first look for babies to develop neck strength and head control, followed by development of strength in their shoulders, arms, core, hips, and legs.
What does developing head control look like? π
πΌ Lifting head while on tummy
πΌ Lifting and turning head while on tummy
πΌ Maintaining head in midline in various positions - supine, prone, being held upright, supported sitting, etc.
πΌ Rolling
What are some ways to help support head control development? π
β Tummy time on a parents chest, propped over a nursing pillow, on flat ground, on an exercise ball
β Being held just over your shoulder, so they can learn to safely hold their head up and turn to look in both directions
When your little one is able to maintain their head in midline and turn their head in both directions in a supported sitting position (usually around 3-4 months of age), we know they are progressing and will soon start working on more core strength allowing them to work on progression of motor skills - rolling, propped sitting, independent sitting and so on!
