We had a truly uplifting experience at an Accessible Nature Well-being Program (ANWP) held at Power to Be's Prospect Lake site near Victoria in September!

People, including those using a variety of mobility devices, joined us along with their care assistants to focus on community building, and self-care through mindful nature connection. After enjoying lunch together, we set out on a guided nature walk led by EcoWisdom-certified Nature Therapy Guides, Penny Goldberg, Kim Dunlop and Tammy van der Kamp.

Calm meditations along the trail helped everyone connect more deeply with the natural world – an important practice for people living with disabilities, chronic illnesses or the stresses of daily life. The perfect weather, complete with a light refreshing shower, created a uniquely beautiful, almost Mystic atmosphere.

Thank you to everyone who made this day special!

In 1998, the Community and Residents Mentors Association (CARMA) was founded by former George Pearson Centre residents Taz Perbhai and the late Mary Margaret Lambert. After successfully transitioning to community living themselves, they returned to help their friends still living in institutional care.

CARMA is a peer mentorship program that helps people with disabilities either transition to independent community living or reclaim their voices and power within care facilities.

Despite facing resistance, they built bridges with staff and families, resurrected the Resident Council, and proved that people with lived experience could mentor and advocate for their peers. Though they weren't seniors when they founded CARMA, they are now—and their work continues today at Oak Care Centre, Dogwood Care Centre, and Cambie Gardens as part of Technology for Living.

We sincerely appreciate RBC and the RBC Foundation Ideas for People & Planet for their continued support of Technology for Living.

This year, Nick Joosten proudly represented TFL at this incredible RBC-sponsored event — and had his best ride yet 🏁, crossing the finish line in just 4 hours and 11 minutes despite the smoke from nearby fires.

Over the past 4 years, RBC Foundation Ideas for People & Planet has generously contributed over $40,000 in grants to support TFL’s work in providing peer support, innovative technologies, and respiratory therapy services that increase independence, inclusion, and wellbeing for people who experience physical barriers.

We’re proud to continue building on this amazing relationship with RBC and look forward to many more opportunities to collaborate and make an impact together. 🙌

Special thanks to Rebecca Pang, RBC Regional Vice President and Nicolas Cucinotta, Relationship Manager, Commercial Financial Services, RBC for making this partnership possible!

Our Community Coordinator, Taylor Danielson, attended CURE SMA Canada’s annual conference in Vancouver this past month, an event held in recognition of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month. SMA is a genetic condition that affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord, leading to progressive muscle weakness.

At the conference, Taylor staffed a Technology for Living booth, sharing information about our programs and services with attendees. He also participated in two important panels:

Patient Gaps — where he spoke about inequitable access to SMA treatment in Canada.

Choosing a Career That’s Right for Me — where he shared his journey of finding the right fit at Technology for Living. His advice: find what you’re good at, leverage it, and keep improving through practice.

The conference brought together individuals, families, researchers, and healthcare professionals dedicated to advancing support and treatment options for the SMA community.
