When it comes to health system interoperability, privacy considerations are often seen as a barrier. However, if approached correctly, privacy can actually be an enabler for interoperability. Canada Health Infoway's primer explores how to use patient-first approaches to the sharing of personal health information (PHI) and how Canadian privacy legislation and principles can help support interoperability efforts. By understanding these concepts, those implementing an interoperable solution can better embed privacy into the design and workflow and mitigate potential risks.
Their primer also answers some key questions clinicians have around sharing patient data, such as, when data can be shared and who is responsible for protecting data once shared.
