Our favourite resource to learn more about this truth is "Whose Land Is It Anyway? A Manual for Decolonization." This work provides a variety of Indigenous perspectives on the history of colonialism, current Indigenous activism and resistance, and outlines the path forward to reconciliation. Originally released as a free e-book, there is also now an audio version featuring renowned Indigenous writers Taiaiake Alfred, Glen Coulthard, Russell Diabo, Beverly Jacobs, Melina Laboucan-Massimo, Kanahus Manuel, Jeffrey McNeil-Seymour, Pamela Palmater, Shiri Pasternak, Nicole Schabus, Senator Murray Sinclair, and Sharon Venne.

"To turn pain into power, one must confront one’s trauma. This can be done in many ways, but it’s not easy and takes time. It can be done through creative ways, such as art, poetry, film, or dance."
- Kelechi Ubozoh

Kelechi is a fierce mental health advocate and co-editor of We’ve Been Too Patient: Voices from Radical Mental Health. Her book brings together a diverse collection of voices sharing their stories of radical healing, and consider the recent movement towards reform in the mental health field, including the mad pride/consumer movement, theatre as therapy, peer support, combatting stigma, and trauma-informed care. This book has inspired us to think and dream outside the box about what's possible.

One year ago, Yassie completed the Psilocybin Therapy training program offered by TPC - Therapeutic Psilocybin for Canadians . Since then, She has had the privilege of working with people offering Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration (PHRI) support.

All mental health treatment options have risks, including traditional psychotherapy and pharmaceutical medications. Yassie is passionate about empowering people with information and access to all options available so they can decide for themselves what options and risks make sense to them.

She is currently taking new clients for Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration support. Navigating this work on your own can be challenging - Yassie can help you develop a plan to ensure that you increase the likelihood of a beneficial outcome and minimize potential risks. Hi everyone! My name is Radha. I am grateful to be a part of the Willow Leaf Counselling team.

I am a Latinx, cis-gender woman who is a settler to Canada. I arrived here as a political refugee from Argentina before the age of 5. Adapting to Canadian society as an immigrant has inspired me to grow a deep interest in how identity and belonging develop and the support we need for both to flourish. I am a Registered Social Worker and Registered Clinical Counsellor. I am registered with the First Nations Health Authority to provide coverage for counselling services for eligible individuals.

I work with children, youth, and adults (10 years and older) experiencing relationship challenges, trauma, discrimination, anxiety & depression, grief & loss and more. I pull from a range of therapies and frameworks, including Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness-Based therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Narrative Therapy, among others. My approach aims to be trauma-informed and justice-oriented (or anti-oppressive). This means that I want to understand how social, environmental, cultural, political, and economic factors influence your well-being. I believe that you don’t have to struggle with what you’re going through alone. Whether you want to heal or push yourself to grow, I want to build a strong relationship with you so that we can better understand your challenges and set you on a path to feeling better.

We are inspired by the Radical Mental Health movement, because when we find a way to understand our story in a way that places our struggles within social and political contexts that understand oppression itself as one of the primary triggers for suffering and emotional distress - our capacity for self compassion and hope for what’s possible can completely transform.

Physiological Sighing.

Take two quick breaths in through the nose, followed by a long exhale through the mouth. Typically, the first inhale is longer than the second, but the second is equally important. The long exhale is where our parasympathetic nervous system is activated, and a relaxation response occurs. Try 2-3 times to reduce stress.

Maya Angelou was raised in the Jim Crow South. She experienced trauma and racism and published many books of poetry and prose. Her spirit, determination, and activism continues to both inspire and remind us that the responsibility of interrogating racism does not rest on the shoulders of those experiencing it. Racial justice work belongs to us all.

Anti-Oppressive therapy is about giving space to grieve and process trauma we experience as individuals as well as communities - including intergenerational trauma. It’s about doing away with hierarchies and power imbalances in the therapy space and building relationships that are empowering. It's about opposing systemic inequalities that have contributed to our grief in the first place. Too often, the social, political, and economic underpinnings of our problems are not considered. An Anti-Oppressive approach in therapy makes space for appreciating the intersecting ways that systems of oppression such as racism, sexism, ableism, and xenophobia shape our lives - especially our mental health.

May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. Hard-won advances for le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, q***r, intersex, and 2 Spirit communities are increasingly under threat. Discriminatory laws, norms and practices are denying 2SLGBTQIA+ people autonomy, safety, access to health care, reproductive rights, and more.

An equal world depends on our commitment to resist Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. Today is a reminder that the struggle is ongoing. Today is an invitation to continue promoting education and awareness, building allyship, celebrating diversity, and advocating for the equal rights and protections of all individuals regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Hi everyone! My name is Yassie, and I'm the founder of Willow Leaf Counselling.

It's been a while, and I wanted to re-introduce myself to our social media community. I am a Registered Social Worker and Clinical Counsellor dedicated to working with people from an anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, and harm-reduction approach. I bring together my clinical practice with my deep commitment to social justice. My social work and advocacy background inspires me to examine our struggles through a lens that appreciates social, environmental, cultural, and political factors of distress. I pull from a range of therapeutic approaches, including Somatic Therapy, Mindfulness, and CBT. I am registered with the First Nations Health Authority and am available to support individuals who have received Health Canada Section 56 exemptions to work with psilocybin therapy.

My caseload is currently full, but my colleague Radha has recently moved from a part-time role to full-time with Willow Leaf Counselling and has space for new clients. I welcome you to book a free consultation with Radha to explore working with her!
