🎉 October 18th is Health Care Assistant Day!

Did you know there are over 52,000 health care assistants registered in B.C.? You may also know this dedicated group of frontline care providers as community health workers, home support workers, community care assistants, and care aides.

🌟 Health care assistants are essential members of the health care team. They provide personal care assistance and promote the well-being of their clients in a variety of settings, including acute care, long-term care, home and community care, independent living, and assisted living.

As B.C.’s population gets older, we need more health care assistants than ever.

👉 Want to become one? Check out the Health Career Access Program (HCAP). It’s a new, fully funded, entry-level opportunity for people interested in joining the health care sector and training as a health care assistant. Once your training is done, you’ll have a job with VCH.

For more information about HCAP, please visit www.vch.ca/HCAP.

Our Chair of VCAFC delivers our vision that all long-term care decisions be made through lens of the resident.
We support this through building engagement with resident and family councils in long-term care 🫶

As we prepare to meet with federal leaders, we're highlighting the critical need for worker retention solutions in Canada's long-term care sector.
With over 25,000 job vacancies in nursing and residential care homes (StatsCan), long-term care operators are providing settlement activities like housing, transportation, and training from their own operating budgets. Our advocacy priorities include better settlement support for internationally educated nurses and including long-term care homes in funding opportunities for newcomer support.
Canadians deserve a stable, skilled workforce dedicated to their care.
