What is yoga ?
A question I’ve been pondering on these past months.
Traveling through Australia, living in a 4x4, sleeping in a roof tent, and changing scenery and surroundings almost everyday, has challenged my practice and my vision of yoga - a lot.
You may think “oh it’s so great, practicing on the beach everyday”, well that happened perhaps 6 times in 10 months!
Truth is, the beginning of this trip was really hard for me, to keep my routine and my idea of an ideal yoga practice. Traveling through Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Queensland, I was never alone: flies, mosquitoes, ants, spiders, you name it.. the grounds were most of the time gravel or uneven and dirty..lots of wind, heat, humidity.. nothing ideal to lay on your mat.
Not to mention the fact that we are on constant movement when on a road trip, so how do you ground? How do you lay roots? How do you slow down?
Let me tell you, the internal conversations in my mind were never ending, and I was fighting with myself a lot.
Always being with that same person the whole time - yes, my partner that I chose to be with - creates a lot of tension, fights, and it becomes difficult.
Hence the necessity of practicing yoga.
I had to shift my vision, and remind myself on a constant basis, that yoga is not happening on my mat. It definitely wasn’t 😅.
Yoga is a way of life, is how I choose to act throughout my day, how I nourish myself and my community, on all levels.
Yoga is how I find union with my surroundings, no matter what they are: from hikes, plunges, walks, drives (and there were many! More than 40,000kms driven so far), and even jobs! How do I stay true to myself, wherever I am, and whatever I am doing.
Even if I cannot have a mat based practice, I find a way to chant, to meditate, to recite mantras on long walks or drives. Movement - any type - is medicine. And that is necessary for wellbeing.
So take this as a reminder for yourself as well, that even if you can’t step on your mat today, even if you are not a fan of asanas, you can still practice yoga. You can still be true to yourself.
Wellbeing is your birthright, as my teacher .yogrishi says it so well.
