What do you over-complicate and how can you simplify that?⁠

What can you outsource?⁠

How can you structure your time so that everything you do is in line with your highest values and purpose?⁠

What actions can you take to make sure your energy bank doesn't deplete to zero?⁠

1) Prenatal supplement - A high quality prenatal supplement will help to ensure optimal nutrient status for the mother and baby. I am very picky when it comes to choosing a prenatal supplement. I want high quality. No additives, preservatives, artificial colours, or flavours. I want to see an appropriate level of micronutrients and in forms that are going to be readily absorbed and utilized (for example, the metabolically active form of folate).⁠⠀

2) Probiotic⁠ - Did you know that the mother's microbiome has a significant impact on the health of the baby? And further, that the mother's microbiome establishes the baby's microbiome? Cooh, hey?! As such, it's important to ensure a healthy microbiome prior to and during pregnancy. ⁠⠀

3) Omega⁠ 3 Fatty Acids - Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that must be consumed in the diet or via supplementation. Adequate consumption of omega-3 fatty acids is important during pregnancy as they are critical building blocks of fetal brain development. Furthermore, evidence suggests that they play a role in preventing perinatal depression.⁠⠀

Let's talk pregnancy prep. In an ideal situation, I like to work with patients for at least 6 months prior to pregnancy. This allows us to address hormonal imbalances as well as any nutrient deficiencies that are present prior to pregnancy.⁠

Addressing hormonal imbalances will provide for a more optimal environment for conception to occur. ⁠

Attending to nutrient deficiencies prior to conception will help to ensure that mom and babe have everything they need during pregnancy and postpartum (when more often than not, moms are left feeling pretty depleted).⁠

Have you heard of Hygge? ⁠

It's a Danish concept centred around finding contentment and appreciation of the simple things in life. ⁠

So maybe now is as good a time as any to embrace Hygge?⁠

⁠With the ongoing restrictions in place in BC, along with darker days, and all of this rain, I’m trying hard to lean into this concept. ⁠

For me that looks like finding meaning in this moment. Recognizing it for what it is. Appreciating the slowness and moments of solitude. Embracing the dark and the rain. And when the sun comes out, (because it will!), really grabbing hold of it. Turning what I may have previously perceived as boredom into an opportunity for reflection and growth. Loving hard on my little family. And when I get to connect with my extended family or friends, be it via technology, briefly at school drop off/pick up, or when restrictions are lifted, really cherishing that connection and appreciating its meaning.⁠

Like everyone else, I miss pre-covid life. I have a long list of things I miss. But can I find more appreciation in my life for the simple things? The intangibles? The things I inherently take (took?) for granted? ⁠Absolutely. ⁠

So are we Hygge-ing it?⁠

I can get pretty elaborate when it comes to supplements/herbs to support sleep, but in most cases, my go-to is a magnesium bisglycinate complex.⁠

Magnesium has many health benefits. Unfortunately, many Canadians are deficient in magnesium due to poor diet, medication depletions or stress. ⁠

Evidence suggests that magnesium can be helpful in cases of insomnia (as well as a long list of other conditions, but that's for another day!)⁠

Magnesium bisglycinate is a form of magnesium that is more easily absorbed and tolerated in the body. It has a calming effect on the body, due, in particular, to the presence of glycine.⁠

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, healthy boundaries are integral to optimal health👈🏻⁠

Boundaries allow you to be true to your relationship with yourself. ⁠

I'm not going to lie, this is something that I work on daily. I'm a classic over-committer, coupled with being a full-on empath.⁠

But I remind myself that creating healthy boundaries allows me to show up fully - for myself, my family and in the work that I do.⁠

Insufficient sleep and weight gain.⁠

Did you know that short sleep affects your appetite regulating hormones, leptin and ghrelin? ⁠

Leptin is your satiety hormone and signals a sense of fullness. Ghrelin, on the other hand, triggers the sensation of hunger.⁠

Short sleep decreases concentrations of leptin, while increasing concentrations of ghrelin, the result being that you end up eating more than you otherwise would.⁠

Moreover, research has shown that insufficient sleep will have you reaching for sugar and carbs because the impulse control regions in your brain are affected.⁠

Moral of the story, getting enough sleep will be a really important component in maintaining a healthy weight. ⁠

Are you getting enough sleep? ⁠

"There does not seem to be one major organ within the body, or process within the brain, that isn't optimally enhanced by sleep (and detrimentally impaired when we don't get enough)." - Matthew Walker, PhD⁠

Insufficient sleep affects your immune system; disrupts blood sugar levels; increases the risk of cardiovascular disease; impacts weight; increases your risk for cognitive decline.⁠..⁠

Sleep is integral to health and is something that I examine closely with all of my patients. If sleep is insufficient or of poor quality, it will absolutely be at the top of our list of issues to address and work together on. ⁠(And yes, parents of young kids, that includes you too!)⁠
