Most people know that a concussion is a type of brain injury that is caused by a blow or jolt to the head, but did you know that a physical impact to the head isn’t necessary to have a concussion? A concussion happens when the brain bounces or moves inside of the skull, so whiplash or quick changes of direction during sport can also result in a concussion.

Some common symptoms of a concussion may include:
- Headaches or migraines
- Dizziness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Nausea or vomiting
- Memory loss
- Loss of consciousness
- Sensitivity to light or sound

These vary case to case, as well as the severity of the concussion and number of previous concussions sustained.

After a concussion, Osteopathic treatment can be very helpful to help promote nervous system regulation and reduce symptoms and stress on the brain and skull.
Osteopathic treatment for concussion focuses on increasing circulation and fluid flow throughout the cranium, as well as drainage to help remove toxins. This will aid in reducing inflammation, and help the body return to its natural autoregulation state.

Treatment of the bones of the skull and cervical spine can help reduce the strain from the event, as well as ensure the brain has the space it needs to heal.
Regardless of if your concussion was years ago, two weeks ago, or you’re unsure if you actually sustained a concussion, osteopathic treatment can help to balance your nervous system and improve energy, mood, and overall wellbeing.

If you’ve been suffering from jaw pain, headaches, difficulty chewing, or grinding your teeth at night, you might have TMJ (temporomandibular joint) dysfunction. Osteopathy can help relieve this discomfort!

As osteopathy is focused on the body’s interconnected systems, treatment for TMJ will look at the joint itself, as well as the cranial bones, muscles and nerves in the area. This can help to:

- Relieve tension in the surrounding muscles, decreasing tension on the jaw itself
Improve circulation and decrease inflammation

- Assist with proper alignment and mobility of the jaw

- Strengthen the correct muscles to help prevent future TMJ pain

Has this struck a chord? Book in today for some TMJ relief - link in bio!

There’s a lot of buzz lately about fascia and fascial stretching! So what exactly is fascia and why should we care?

Fascia is a type of tissue that surrounds, supports and connects every single organ, muscle and bone in your body. You can think of it like a spider web that helps to keep everything in place and help us move. It plays a role in proper posture, mobility and overall health. When fascia is healthy, it allows for surfaces to glide on each other and move through their full range of motion. But when it is stiff, restricted, or adhered (which can happen due to stress, injury, illness, poor posture), it can cause pain, limited range of motion and muscle imbalance.

How can we help maintain healthy fascia?
There are several ways to help keep the fascia gliding properly, including staying hydrated, moving our bodies with walks, weight training or yoga, and booking in for osteo to help release fascia at deeper levels!

If you're constantly feeling drained, it could be more than just a busy schedule. Osteopathy will look at all aspects of your body to help you recharge. Here’s how osteopathy can give you a boost of energy!

Improves circulation: Osteopathy helps remove blockages preventing optimal blood flow. This brings more oxygen and nutrients to your tissues, increasing energy and mental clarity.

Supports the nervous system: Osteopathy helps to balance your nervous system, moving you more into your rest and digest mode, which can promote better sleep and recovery.

Improved lymphatic flow: This will help to clear out toxins, leaving your body feeling more revitalized.

Releases tensions: Osteopathy helps to properly align the body, which removes unnecessary tensions from muscle groups and allows for easier, deeper breathing.

"How often should I receive osteopathic treatment?"

Osteopathy focuses on the body's ability to heal itself, and although the frequency of treatment depends on your individual goals and needs, follow-up appointments are suggested 1-4 weeks apart to give your body time to integrate the treatment and changes. To see the most impact, 3-4 sessions are usually suggested, so we can work on any deeper dysfunction that might be contributing to your symptoms. However, chronic conditions can take longer than this to work through.

THE BASIS OF OSTEOPATHY

Osteopathy is a holistic and unique approach to working with the body, and is guided by 4 key principles. This helps guide osteopathic practitioners in their treatment and can help explain why sessions are beneficial!

1. The body is a functional unit

Everything in the body is interconnected- our bones, muscles, organs and tissues all work together as a single system. When one of these parts is out of balance, it will impact the entire body. Osteopathy sessions focus on treating the entire body, not just one part in isolation.

2. Structure and function and interrelated
How our body is structured (our posture and alignment) will impact its function. If your body is not aligned, it can lead to dysfunctions in other systems in the body. Osteopathy aims to restore proper alignment to ensure all bodily systems are optimized.

3. The body has the ability to autoregulate

The human body has an amazing capacity to heal itself and regulate. Osteopathy works to support this process by removing tensions and helping to restore balance.

4. The role of the artery is supreme

In Osteopathy, we believe that proper circulation, especially blood flow, is of utmost importance for the body’s health and wellness. Osteopathy focuses on removing blockages that prevent blood flow, as well as supporting the organs that help to deliver blood to the tissues and remove waste. This can help to reduce inflammation, speed healing, and promote overall wellness.
