Did you know we offer office ergonomics?

If you’re anything like most of our Symmetrix clients, you spend most of your day at a desk and behind a screen.

Corrective exercises are helpful, but if someone spends too much time in a single static position with relatively little movement, corrective exercises lose effectiveness.

A group of researchers wanted to test just how important correct ergonomic posture is in pain management. They had 2 groups: one who received an ergonomic assessment and equipment adjustment, and a group who did not.

No surprise to us here at Symmetrix that the group who had their workstations adjusted reported less pain, less pain duration and less pain intensity.

This study was done without any equipment changes, only adjustments to desk height, keyboard placement, monitor distance, and height.

This really highlights the importance of ergonomics in pain reduction.

Could your workstation be stalling your progress with pain? Visit our website to book your ergonomic assessment today!

Have you had a fear of exercising after getting an injury?

Check out these findings from a newly published study that looked into the effects of kinesiophobia (the fear of movement due to pain or reinjury) after a knee replacement.

According to one of our kinesiologists, Curtis, fear of movement is something he sees every day at Symmetrix, and it holds some clients back on their road to recovery. This study confirms that people with higher levels of fear showed worse outcomes following surgery, slower progress in mobility, strength and daily living activities. From Curtis’s experience, fear is common with movement after injury.

At the root of this barrier to recovery is mindset and psychological state. The researchers found that psychological readiness was just as important as physical recovery in the initial period following surgery.

This study shows that confidence in movement is critical to recovery and success. Fear limits the activities that a person recovering from an injury attempts, and the lack of movement further delays recovery. On the flip side, some people recovering from an injury push too hard, and if they push past their limits, it can also delay their progress.

In Curtis's experience, people recovering from an injury can usually do and tolerate more than they give themselves credit for because of kinesiophobia. This is one of the benefits of working with a kinesiologist; their professional training and expertise can help guide recovery at an appropriate level to optimize recovery from injury.

Curtis and our team are here to help! Visit our website to learn more about how we can support your recovery.

September is Pain Awareness Month

This month, we want to recognize the impact of pain on people’s daily lives and highlight the importance of effective management and support.

Pain is not always just a physical sensation! It can affect mood, sleep, energy, and overall quality of life. The good news is that there are many strategies to manage and reduce pain, from movement and exercise to mindfulness, rehabilitation, and medical care.

At Symmetrix, we believe in an active approach that empowers our community to move with confidence, rebuild strength, and enhance their overall well-being despite experiencing pain.

Check out this evidence-based insight from Curtis, one of our kinesiologists:

A recent study explored whether elastic knee sleeves (the kind you can find at Shoppers Drug Mart or London Drugs) could improve balance in healthy older adults.

While knee sleeves are often marketed for injury recovery, their actual effectiveness has been debated. This study took a different angle, testing their impact on balance specifically.

Participants completed tasks with their eyes closed and while standing on unstable surfaces --> The results? Those wearing the knee sleeves showed improved balance and stability!

Researchers suggested two main reasons why:
1. Increased confidence that the knee was supported
2. Better awareness of knee position (also known as proprioception)

Confidence in movement plays a big role in recovery and is a key part of our kinesiologists’ work. When people feel more secure, they’re more willing to try movements they’ve avoided.

That willingness creates a positive feedback loop: more movement leads to more confidence, which leads to more activity, and ultimately helps people get back to doing the things they love!

Keep up with us to learn more evidence-based exercise tips and how they can support your recovery, strength, and confidence in movement 💪🏽

Our Story

Symmetrix started in Burnaby the fall of 1992 as founder Terry Stone began training a variety of clients ranging from students, local celebrities, amateur athletes, and even professional hockey players. In 1997 services were expanded to include exercise rehabilitation programming; primarily with clients who were referred from ICBC and the Burnaby-studio was relocated to a private Endowment Land location near UBC.

This year has seen exciting changes at Symmetrix: Kent and Dasha join the Symmetrix team as new owners.

We come to invigorate and steer Symmetrix. Our aim is to continue offering the quality of experience and care you are familiar with, while also bringing new energy to our professional team. Our 5 amazing Kinesiologists and staff are staying with us through the transition.

Dasha is a lifelong learner and is dedicated to serving her clients with the highest quality of care. We are enthusiastic and excited to be part of her team of professional kinesiologists.
