Check out this evidence-based insight from Curtis, one of our kinesiologists:
A recent study explored whether elastic knee sleeves (the kind you can find at Shoppers Drug Mart or London Drugs) could improve balance in healthy older adults.
While knee sleeves are often marketed for injury recovery, their actual effectiveness has been debated. This study took a different angle, testing their impact on balance specifically.
Participants completed tasks with their eyes closed and while standing on unstable surfaces --> The results? Those wearing the knee sleeves showed improved balance and stability!
Researchers suggested two main reasons why:
1. Increased confidence that the knee was supported
2. Better awareness of knee position (also known as proprioception)
Confidence in movement plays a big role in recovery and is a key part of our kinesiologists’ work. When people feel more secure, they’re more willing to try movements they’ve avoided.
That willingness creates a positive feedback loop: more movement leads to more confidence, which leads to more activity, and ultimately helps people get back to doing the things they love!
