One of a disabled persons most fundamental rights is to communicate. That right shall not be taken away. That right is enshrined in our Charter.
Access to licensed speech language pathologists for adults is really difficult for those on disability. Unless you’re non verbal, your right to speak, your voice, could potentially be silenced. It goes back to the days of those with intellectual disabilities being stripped of their voice.
Often with those on the spectrum, their prosody is decent but they struggle with communicating what they want to say. Some have never had formal social skills training. Some have something they want to say, however stuttering, difficulty with speech, or a difficultly putting together words is a challenge.
Speech language pathologists are an essential service for those with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Let’s make speech language pathologists a part of our healthcare system for more than rehabilitation.
