If there is one thing I want people to understand about dry eye, it’s that sometimes it isn’t just an eye problem.
Sjögren’s is one of the most underdiagnosed autoimmune diseases. An estimated 4 million people in the U.S. alone have it, and many don’t know.
It doesn’t always show up the way you expect. You can feel “fine” while the surface of the eye is already under stress.
Tear production is often reduced. The tear film becomes unstable. And over time, we can start to see changes to the ocular surface, even when symptoms don’t seem severe. This is why the eyes are often one of the first places we pick up on it. Long before a diagnosis is made. Sometimes even before bloodwork shows anything.
Share this with someone who’s been told it’s “just dry eye” but still isn’t better. Because treating dry eye properly starts with understanding what’s actually driving it.
