This year, it’s more important than ever to protect ourselves and others around us from influenza, especially our health care workers and those who may be more likely to develop severe illness that would put them in hospital.

💛💛💛💛

Influenza vaccines are provided at a wide variety of locations across the province including:

- Public health clinics
- Pharmacies (pharmacists can immunize people 5 years of age and older with injectable vaccine and 2 years and older with nasal spray influenza vaccine)
- Doctors’ offices
- Travel clinics

* Services vary by location. You can use the Influenza (Flu) Clinic Locator to find an influenza vaccine clinic near you.

Hello! 💛 Please meet more members of our team! ⁣

Dr. Tram Nguyen is a co-director of The Kids Clinic. Dr. Nguyen was naturally drawn to pediatrics. She has such an appreciation for working with children, from infants to teenagers, and their families. Their vulnerability, resilience, and general positive demeanor make children a very special population with which to work. ⁣

✈️ Favourite travel destination: ⁣Dr. Nguyen loves Italy and could eat pasta, pizza, and gelato everyday! She also loves Australia, it’s such a stunning country! ⁣

📚 Dr. Nguyen is currently reading “When you’re expecting twins, triplets, or quads”. She is trying to prepare as much as possible for likely the greatest challenge of her life and also career as a pediatrician... raising twins! ⁣

Message from Dr. Nguyen to her patients: “you are in very caring and capable hands of Dr. Michelle Sherwood during my leave” 💛⁣

Dr. Michelle Sherwood will be locuming for Dr. Tram Nguyen. ⁣

Dr. Sherwood became a pediatrician because she is forever a kid at heart and can relate to children and loves working with families. She is also inspired by their strength and resilience and find “bread and butter” pediatric diagnosis interesting. Her proudest professional moment was the decision to follow her dreams and switch careers after her second baby, and become a “doc mom”! This has been hard but so rewarding and fuels Dr. Sherwood’s passion for lifelong learning and helping others. ⁣

Her children are her pride and joy - her eldest daughter will be at SFU this year, her son is in grade 11 and competing for hockey scholarships, and her youngest daughter loves horses, tennis, and soccer! ⁣

📚 Dr. Sherwood’s recent favourite book was “The Choice” written by a 90 year old Aushchwitz survivors life and how to overcome anything. ⁣

Dr. Tram Nguyen is now on her mat leave, and Dr. Michelle Sherwood will be her locum. ⁣

Thank you, and please stay safe! 💛 ⁣

Talking to your kids about COVID-19 and how they are feeling about it.⁣

🔸 Start the conversation. Let your child know you are someone they can talk to about COVID-19. ⁣

🔸 First, find out what they understand.⁣

🔸 Show that you care and understand, and normalize their feelings. (“I understand why you think that.” “It makes sense that you are worried about COVID-19.” “I am sad that we can’t go on our trip.”)⁣

🔸 Be ready with information and answers that are true, appropriate for your child’s age, and consistent.⁣

🔸 Be ready to talk about what COVID-19 is (“COVID-19 is a new kind of virus. It can also be called coronavirus. Viruses can make people sick. COVID-19 makes most people only a little bit sick, but can make a very small group of people really sick. So that’s why everyone is working hard to take care of it.”).⁣

🔸 Also be ready to explain things like “social distancing” (“Social distancing means that we try to keep a space between people if we go out. We are careful about crowds and what we touch.”)⁣

🔸 Look out for your child asking lots of questions, or the same question over and over again. This can be a sign of anxiety. You answering the same question again and again often actually serves to raise, or maintain their anxiety over time. If this happens, try saying something that acknowledges the anxiety (“You’ve asked me that before; you’re really worried. It is stressful. Can you remind me what I said last time when you asked that question?”)⁣

🔸 Point out the people who are helping and plan a way to help others with your child. Practise gratitude for what you do have and what you are able to do. Focus on the positive.⁣

🔸 Practice what you are going to say with yourself or another adult ahead of time so when you speak with your child, you are calm and prepared with what you want to say.⁣

🔸 If you don’t know the answer, it’s OK to say you don’t know. As a parent you can always ask others and then answer the question later.⁣
