At 79, Joan MacDonald is an unlikely fitness icon. When she turned 70, she was struggling with her health, weight, and chronic pain. With the help of her daughter and coach, fitness expert Michelle Macdonald, Joan transformed her life—reclaiming her strength, building a global community of over 2 million women, and even gracing the cover of Women’s Health magazine!

We spoke with Joan and Michelle on The Movement Living Podcast about the emotional turning point that sparked Joan’s transformation, how she’s staying strong while recovering from recent shoulder surgery, Michelle’s best advice on healthy eating, putting an end to chronic dieting, why women MUST do more than walking, and the importance of believing in yourself. "I can hardly believe it, but I baked bread for the first time ever last week—Irish soda bread, to be exact. I've always thought of myself as a lousy baker (though I can make a decent soup or stew), but after trying some Irish soda bread and discovering how easy it is to make, I decided to just jump in.

Was it perfect? Not even close. I still have to get the dough consistency worked out better. But the feeling of pulling that warm loaf out of the oven—and having my family actually love it—was so satisfying!

Here’s what I learned: trying something new is always worth it, and you're probably much more capable than you think. You can be a beginner at any time in your life, and honestly, it's liberating! And here's the other reminder: spending time making something (especially nourishing food!) and enjoying it with the people you love, whether it’s family, friends, or neighbors, that's one of the pillars of living well and aging better. So go ahead, try that thing you've been putting off. You might just surprise yourself."

When journalist Clare Johnston’s parents Rhoda and Michael reached their 80s, they began to feel weaker and less mobile. Rather than accept decline as inevitable, Clare set out to prove that it’s never too late to rebuild strength and independence.

Rebuilding Mum & Dad is a new series coming soon on Movement Living that follows their remarkable transformation as the family began their strength training journey. Incredibly, Rhoda went from having to use a walker at 81 to being able to walk independently—a powerful reminder of how strength can truly rebuild freedom at any age.

This is a story of overcoming fear, regaining confidence, and not sugar-coating the reality of getting fit and strong later in life. Just start wherever you are!
