There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to cosmetic treatments but after more than 11 years in practice as a cosmetic dermatologist here are a few truths that I want people to know. If you have questions drop them in comments below and let me know if you’d like to see more of these.

I get lots of questions on LED and wanted to put together a quick guide. Based on available data I believe red light devices can be beneficial and they are one of the only at-home devices I use or recommend. They work through a process called photobiomodulation, which means they use light to stimulate a response in the skin at the cellular level. Different wavelengths have been shown to target different levels of the skin and deliver different benefits. Many devices provide both red and near-infrared but be sure to confirm the wavelengths of the device you are purchasing.

I view LED as a “nice to have” (but not “must have”) complement to a good skincare routine and in-office treatments. I personally use both a mask and hair helmet. LED panels can also be a good option to consider. I am not as big of a fan of LED face wands because they target a limited area, making it difficult to get consistent coverage, and in some cases are less powerful. If you are going to try at-home LED I believe it is worth making the investment in a high-quality device and I recommend Omnilux and CurrentBody as best in class. I also have been trying out the Kala mask as an affordable alternative (available at Costco Canada). I have not personally used iRestore but it is a reputable brand as well.

Following up my recent morning routine post with my current evening skincare routine. First step is to ensure skin is clean and free from makeup, sunscreen, etc. so if you can do that with a single cleanse that’s great and if not then you may want to try double cleansing (I’m currently loving this Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser from Cetaphil). I am currently using multiple serums to target different signs of aging and help with overall glow. I start with P-TIOX, a peptide serum, and then use my Plated exosome serum, followed by my retinol (currently loving the AlphaRet). I follow that with an eye cream and moisturizer. Let me know if you have any questions or would like to hear more about any of these products. While some of these products are on the more expensive side, I will share a more affordable am/pm routine soon!

Sharing my current morning routine. I start my day by doing my LED mask and try to fit in a quick meditation as a nice start to the day! In terms of skincare I keep it simple in the morning: cleanser, antioxidant, moisturizer and sunscreen. I do switch up my products more often than I would recommend to my patients (as I generally preach to find what works and stick with it!) but I like to try things out so I am familiar with them. This is what I am currently using but I have other options I like at each step so if you have any questions just ask!

I’ve been seeing a lot of tanning videos lately so I had to bring back the hard to swallow memes series with a special edition for the sun worshippers out there. Share this with someone who needs the PSA.

I loved seeing the recent posts of women sharing openly about their plastic surgery and other treatments they do. Hopefully this transparency helps to reduce the stigma and shaming that is still too commonplace. These are things I do.

It’s time for more hard to swallow skincare truths. Sorry to add this to your Monday 😅
