Congratulations on your award! Glad to have had you as partners on the BC Children's and BC Women's Redevelopment Project.

Balfour Beatty, in conjunction with our partner Ledcor, is proud to have been recognized by the Vancouver Regional Construction Association with a 2018 Gold Award for the BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital’s new Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC) project in the “over $50 million” category. This new, $350 million project replaced aging infrastructure and provides 640,000 SF of much-needed space to accommodate the teams and technologies required to treat chronic and complex illnesses. Congrats to the entire project team on this award!

Phase 3 of the redevelopment project includes the renovation and enhancement of BC Women’s FIR (Families in Recovery) Square Combined Care Unit, a program pioneered at the hospital and highlighted in this recent CBC News story. The new space is purpose designed to support the unique needs of the program and the women and newborns who receive this specialized care.

Canada's opioid crisis extends to society's very youngest: About 2,000 newborns are born with opioid exposure. But more and more, hospitals are trying to minimize the impact this has on new mothers and their babies, by allowing them to stay together in same room as they undergo treatment.

“The artwork provides distraction and cheers people up in clinical areas. Families and patients ask to have photos taken of themselves in the room with the art. That’s never happened before. They have conversations about the artwork—what they like and why. It’s really changed the focus of conversations and the atmosphere.” – Analyn Perez, clinical nurse coordinator

What a great volunteer story highlighting the amazing Teck ACC outdoor spaces and how they are a great escape for families. Phase 3 of the redevelopment project will also see the addition of several new outdoor gardens and patios for Sunny Hill that will provide children and families a place to take a break and get outside.

“I volunteer every Friday morning, and with each shift I see the impact of this amazing building. Each patient and their family has the privacy of a single room with a pullout couch for loved ones to sleep on. This makes a huge difference. Previously, most of the patients had only curtains separating them from one another and parents had to leave their child in the intensive care unit at night.

Just a few weeks ago, a sister of one very sick patient was upset because of what her brother was going through. She was in the room with machines beeping and tests being done and her brother connected to so many wires. The child life specialist asked her if she wanted to come with me and we went to the playrooms and the outdoor area on the fifth floor. We played tag and ran around. She went from being visibly distressed to hysterically laughing. When we came back down to the intensive care unit, she met her mom with a huge smile and gave her a great big hug. I could see how happy it made her mom.
I remember as a child how important it was to be able to run around outside. With this outdoor area, we are able to distract the siblings and give them the outdoor play they need, while parents are able to stay with their sick child.” – Nellie, volunteer

Amazing memories from the opening of the Teck Acute Care Centre (ACC) just over a year ago.

Amazing memories from the opening of the Teck Acute Care Centre (ACC) just over a year ago.

“I'll always remember what I saw when I first entered the new hospital, I was the first patient in the oncology unit. All the nurses, doctors and volunteers had lined up to form an archway with their arms welcoming me. Coming through the archway I arrived at my room and was given scissors to cut the banner that they had made for me. I will also always remember when the nurse came in and said, 'Chloe, you're done. No more chemo. You can go home now. You're never going to feel like this again.' The first feeling that came to me was relief. Followed closely by gratefulness to the hospital and nurses for all their help and support.” - Chloe, age 11
