Dear friends, by coincidence or by fate, I bumped into Sahar Ahmadi at the lobby of the Vancouver Unitarians and learned of her courageous story. Unfortunately the Van U Refugees Committee, which has been well known for supporting refugees, is currently so over loaded that its Waiting List is not open.

Sahar is a 17 year old refugee from Afghanistan and alone in Canada. As a young woman, she wants to be like her father and to become a physician. Yet under the Taliban regime, her dreams and even freedom were being taken away. Please learn her stories here

I’ve been working with like-minded people and formed the Sahar’s Support Group. The Sahar’s Family Rescue Fund and website was setup by Paul to provide information and donation links.

On May 4th, there will be a reception and film screening of the awards winning documentary “One Tree, Three Lives” with Q&A with director Angie Chen. Angie has offered to donate her fees to the Rescue Fund in support of Sahar and her family.

Vaisakhi is a Sikh spring harvest festival. The annual Vancouver Vaisakhi Parade is this Saturday April 13. It starts at 11 am at the Khalsa Diwan, or commonly known as the Ross Street Temple, 8000 Ross St, on SE Marine Dr.

A bit of history about this temple
https://placesthatmatter.ca/location/first-sikh-temple/

If you want to go to visit the Ross Street Sikh temple (dress code) and learn about Komagata Maru, I can meet you at the temple at 10 am. The temple also serves delicious lunch. Pls registerster with me if you are interested.

There will be a group lead by Cecilia Gruber meeting at 11:30 at Main and 49th Ave.

If you happen to love Indian vegetarian food and chai, you’ll enjoy the many stalls giving out free food, drinks, and sweets. There are so many food stalls that one never leaves hungry.
