In this , we are sharing the interview with Ms. Lamia Khan, a PhD Candidate in the Rheumatology Division of the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta. A recent study she was involved in found that severe systemic sclerosis patients develop DNA breaks in skin cells, leading to mutations. In her discussion with Ellen Wang, ACE’s Programs Coordinator, Lamia defines what metabolic stress remodelling is and share insights into the roles of fibrosis causing molecules called Foxo1 in promoting cancer-like changes in systemic sclerosis. She concludes with some tips on self-advocacy for people living with scleroderma.

Arthritis is Canada’s #1 cause of work disability — but supportive workplaces can make all the difference.

Arthritis affects more than 6 million Canadians and is the leading cause of disability in the country. The disease costs our economy over $33 billion each year, driven by work disability, lost productivity, and medication expenses.

According to a white paper by Leger Healthcare and Arthritis Society Canada, most people living with arthritis want to keep working — but need workplace flexibility, understanding, and access to timely treatment.

ACE believes “9 to 5 support for arthritis is good business.”

Here’s why:
➡Arthritis typically strikes during prime working years (ages 35–50).
➡Employers who adapt work environments can reduce disability costs and retain experienced employees.
➡Within 10 years of onset, up to 50% of people with rheumatoid arthritis are work disabled if left untreated.

World-class researcher Dr. Diane Lacaille of Arthritis Research Canada is leading innovations like the Making It Work™ program — a unique, online solution that helps people with arthritis remain employed through ergonomic assessments, stress management, and job retention strategies.

How can we better prevent and treat arthritis in Indigenous communities?

Dr. Cheryl Barnabe’s new study — Indigenous Inflammatory Arthritis Prevention and Treatment approaches for Health Equity (IIA-PATH) — is answering that question.

With Indigenous co-leaders Dr. Terri-Lynn Fox, Dr. Stephanie Montesanti, and Dr. Pamela Roach, the project brings Indigenous knowledge, community partnerships, and Western science together

Their work focuses on:
➡Early screening for arthritis risk in Indigenous communities
➡Shared decision-making between doctors and patients
➡Peer-support and arthritis liaison programs rooted in community healing

Visit https://arthritiscalltoaction.ca to explore Indigenous arthritis resources, patient stories, and health-equity tools.

October 12 is !

Indigenous Peoples in Canada experience some of the highest rates of serious or life-threatening arthritis in the world. Arthritis often begins earlier, is more severe, and leads to greater disability — yet access to care remains unequal.

Based on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, Indigenous communities are leading their own health priorities to improve culturally safe, community-based arthritis care and wellness services.

At Arthritis Consumer Experts, we stand with Indigenous partners working to improve arthritis prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment through self-determined, holistic approaches.

We highlight the work of Dr. Cheryl Barnabe, Senior Scientist at Arthritis Research Canada, who is leading the Indigenous Inflammatory Arthritis Prevention and Treatment approaches for Health Equity (IIA-PATH) study. This five-year project (2025–2030) partners with Siksika Nation, Kainai Nation, Otipemisiwak Métis Government, and Elbow River Healing Lodge to co-develop arthritis screening and culturally grounded care plans
