There are a lot of people who tell themselves they want to get in shape. But they can't seem to do anything about it.
Or they USED to be fit - and for some reason, it's just not happening anymore. Why is it so hard now?
It's crazy making because it's not like you DON'T KNOW what to do.
- Just go workout
- Start eating chia or salads instead of fast food
- Drink more water
- Stop eating so many goddamn snacks at night!
But for some reason, it just never happens.
It's a sh*tty feeling - so we often push the sh*tty feeling aside. We distract ourselves. We say, "there's more to life, whatever" and go back to watching our shows, or TikTok.
We don't think about how fast time is actually passing. We're already halfway through August...more than halfway through 2024. How many years has it been since we told ourselves we were going to do better?
How would we feel if suddenly we woke up, ten years older, and we were STILL exactly where we were. How the f** did that happen!?
It's such a human thing to push away our pain, not realizing it's leading us to so much regret further down the road.
My opinion - from all the people I've worked with and way beyond just fitness clients, but everyone I've worked with/talked to in the self-improvement space - there's a common reason we don't take action.
And it's this: we're afraid of being miserable with success.
Think about it.
What's it take to be in shape?
If your brain thinks, "oh, I'll have to get up earlier, I'll have to be exhausted in the gym everyday, I won't have time for family or fun, I won't ever have tasty foods again, I'll have to be hungry all the time"....
We don't recognize this is what our beliefs are, but they keep us safe by sabotaging our efforts.
And if you think about it, it's the same with every kind of success.
If we want better jobs/more money, so often we subconsciously hold ourselves back because "what if it means I'm going to be stressed, or burnt out, or have to do things for work that I don't enjoy!?"
If we don't challenge these beliefs, they will always act on us.
And we can ONLY change these beliefs by giving it DIFFERENT evidence.
You don't need to be "ready", you need to decide to face the fear - and open up to the possibility that success does not mean misery.
Fitness, being in shape, does not mean misery.
I'm not saying it's not hard work - but we are making it way worse in our heads than it has to be.
And hey, f* #$ing reminder to you: hard work can actually be satisfying.
You can look back in your life and find evidence for that. Think of any passion project you've done and BOOM, there you go.
I used to scoff at people who told me that everyone is afraid of success - and in a way, it's not true. But it IS true that we are afraid of what success MIGHT MEAN.
And until we challenge that, we will stay exactly as we are - even if years go by. And when you think of it like that, isn't that even scarier?
