3 sensory-friendly strategies you can try at home today. No appointment needed. No fancy equipment. Just stuff that works 🙌

🟢 Create a calm-down corner
Pick a quiet spot, toss in a few pillows, a blanket, maybe a fidget or two. A place your child knows they can go to reset. No time-out. Just a recharge spot.
🟢 Try "heavy work" before transitions
Pushing a laundry basket, carrying grocery bags, doing animal walks down the hallway. Heavy input helps the body organize before a big shift (like leaving the house or sitting down for dinner).
🟢 Use a visual schedule
Pictures or simple drawings showing what's coming next. It takes the guesswork out of the day and gives kids a sense of control. Game changer for transition meltdowns.

These are strategies we use in OT sessions all the time. And the best part? They work just as well at home.

Which one are you trying first? Drop it in the comments! 👇

Hey Vernon! Let's make this official 👋

I'm Zoe, and I'm the OT behind Play 2 Learn 4 Life.

A few things about me:
🎓 UBC-trained in Occupational Therapy with a Diploma in Infant Development
🧠 I specialize in autism, DCD, ADHD, sensory processing, and mental health
🎿 Former XC ski coach, snowboard instructor, and kayak guide in adapted recreation
🌿 I believe the best therapy happens through play, in nature, and in the spaces where kids already live their lives

I started Play 2 Learn 4 Life because I wanted to build something rooted in community. Something that meets families where they are, not where a clinic says they should be.

And now I get to do that right here in the North Okanagan. Which honestly feels pretty special.

If you're a Vernon parent, wave hello in the comments! I'd love to get to know you. 🙋♀️

Not sure if your child could benefit from occupational therapy? Here are 5 signs to look for 👇

Remember: these aren't "problems." They're signals. Your child isn't giving you a hard time. They're having a hard time.

1️⃣ Fine motor tasks feel really frustrating (buttons, zippers, scissors, writing)
2️⃣ Certain textures, sounds, or environments are overwhelming
3️⃣ Transitions between activities bring on big meltdowns
4️⃣ Self-regulation is a daily struggle (for them AND for you)
5️⃣ They avoid activities other kids their age seem to enjoy

If a few of these hit home, OT might be the missing piece. And we'd love to help.

Play 2 Learn 4 Life now offers pediatric OT in both Vernon and Vancouver 💛

Save this for later. Share it with a parent in your life who's been searching for answers.

Here's what we love about home-based OT in the Okanagan 🏔️

When therapy happens at home, something kind of magical happens. Kids are calmer. They're in their element. And we get to see the real picture of what daily life looks like for them and their family.

That means:
✅ Less anxiety (no unfamiliar clinic, no waiting room)
✅ Strategies built around YOUR actual routines
✅ Therapist sees the real challenges, not the "clinic version"
✅ Kids learn in the space where they'll actually use their new skills

And let's be real...getting out the door with kids is a whole thing. We come to you. In Vernon. In the North Okanagan. With snacks-level enthusiasm for play-based therapy. 😄

April is also OT Month! 🎉 So let's clear something up...

Occupational therapy for kids is NOT just handwriting practice (no shade to handwriting, but there's so much more going on).

Here's what a session with us might actually look like:
🧸 Sensory play that helps kids regulate their bodies
🎯 Games that build fine and gross motor skills
🧠 Strategies for handling big emotions and tricky transitions
🪜 Practicing real daily life skills through play

The motto says it all: play is the work of children. And we take that work seriously (while keeping it seriously fun).

This year's OT Month theme is "Enriching Lives Through Meaningful Engagement" and honestly that's the best way to describe what we do every day.

April is Autism Acceptance Month and we're kicking it off with a question: what does acceptance actually look like in everyday life?

Spoiler: it's not just a hashtag. It's the small, real things. Here are 4 ways families can practice acceptance every single day 👉
💛 Creating sensory-friendly spaces at home
💛 Letting go of "should" and meeting your child where they are
💛 Celebrating the small wins (because they're actually the big ones)
💛 Trusting that different is not less

At Play 2 Learn 4 Life, this is the lens we bring to every session. And we're so excited to now be bringing it to families in the Greater Vernon area too!

Save this one. Share it with someone who needs to see it today 💛

My photos don’t do this justice. But here’s an example out a cozy nook in our home. My kiddo is always building ‘forts’. Although I’m not a fan of that term. It is her safe sensory space. With pillows and blankets and her fuzzy chair. Fun fact that was MY plush chair from when I was 3 years old. My parents kept it and mom re-upholstered it with faux fur for my kiddo. Upcycling for the next generation
I think my kid needs the heavy work of building things when she gets home from school. And then needs a space that is only hers after having no autonomy in school all day.
We got creative and made this space by moving the couch forward and letting her keep this one up for a few days. Made my living room cozier too. It’s important to ‘let go’ of having your home be fashionable. And let your kids know that your home is theirs too.

I love this quote: “ a worksheet is a 2D solution to a 3-D”
Printing doesn’t start with tracing letters on paper. It starts with core strength and shoulder stability, hand strength and pencil grasp.

We need to stop asking if a four year old can write their name and start asking if they can climb a tree or hang from the monkey bars. I know it sounds counterintuitive, especially when we are bombarded with the idea that academic success starts with a workbook, but the science of child development tells a very different story.

I see it so often. A child is struggling with handwriting, not because they do not know the letters, but because they do not have the core strength to sit upright at a desk or the shoulder stability to move a pencil across a page. A worksheet is a 2D solution to a 3D problem. If the foundations of the body are not strong, the fine motor skills will always struggle to follow.

When we push children into academic tasks before their bodies are physically ready, we are not giving them a head start. We are actually setting them up for a lifetime of physical fatigue and frustration. If a child has to use all their energy just to keep their body from slumping over, they have no mental energy left for learning.

Our educators know this. When they choose a morning of climbing, digging in the mud, or navigating an obstacle course, they are doing the deep, essential work of school readiness. They are building the core, the grip strength, and the visual tracking skills that will eventually make reading and writing feel easy.

Educators, what is the one thing you wish parents understood about the importance of play over paperwork?

Parents, what is your biggest worry when it becomes to your child being ready for school?

If you’re thinking of making a sensory space in your home, FDMT has this nice simple article with links on where to buy some tools. I often purchase from them however it is in Quebec so shipping charges to BC are higher. Odin books also has a nice online store for the similar sensory tools and Vancouver based. I miss their brick and mortar store
Most homes in Vancouver are limited on square footage. I’ve heard of some parents using a nook under the stairs or converting a small closet. Often a smaller space is actually cozier.

Learn how to create a sensory space at home to help your child calm down, manage their emotions, and reduce sensory overload.

I like having this research to back up one of my handouts on classroom design and sensory spaces for schools. Recommends 20-50% of bare wall or ‘white space’. It is similar in our clinic. We want it to feel calm and simple. Not overstimulating. Keeps the focus on the task/lesson.
I have memories of being a kid and having just learned to read. My brain was compelled to have to read everything everywhere. I recall going into a new classroom with so many posters. Maybe it was another grade and we swapped for a lesson. But I couldn’t focus on what the new teacher was saying as my brain scanned the room and had to read everything.
