3 sensory-friendly strategies you can try at home today. No appointment needed. No fancy equipment. Just stuff that works 🙌
🟢 Create a calm-down corner
Pick a quiet spot, toss in a few pillows, a blanket, maybe a fidget or two. A place your child knows they can go to reset. No time-out. Just a recharge spot.
🟢 Try "heavy work" before transitions
Pushing a laundry basket, carrying grocery bags, doing animal walks down the hallway. Heavy input helps the body organize before a big shift (like leaving the house or sitting down for dinner).
🟢 Use a visual schedule
Pictures or simple drawings showing what's coming next. It takes the guesswork out of the day and gives kids a sense of control. Game changer for transition meltdowns.
These are strategies we use in OT sessions all the time. And the best part? They work just as well at home.
