https://mountpleasantoptometry.visualbook.ca We provide eye health exams and assessment of visual function.

Having opened on January 2nd, 1950, we are one of BC's oldest Optometry clinics and have been in business for over 7 decades. In October 2023, we expanded into a brand new building at 450 East Broadway which offers many improvements - notably much more space, parking, and security. We have an amazing staff and enjoy deep patient loyalty in the funky bohemian, and growing Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. Our mission continues to be dedicated to providing the best quality eye exams we can, and to helping patients make informed decisions for any products or services they may require. and prescribe glasses, contact lenses, surgical co-management, and specialized treatments such as orthokeratology (non-surgical reduction of myopia) and vision training (eye exercises for various eye muscle problems). We also treat red eyes and dry eyes. All children require full eye exams by an Optometrist by age 3 at the latest; in fact we can examine your children's eyes as young as 6 months of age. If vision problems run in your family, bringing your children in for their first exam at a young age is highly recommended. Please Note: We are closed all Statutory Holidays

What is a Low Vision Doctor?

A low vision practitioner is an eye care professional who focuses on helping people make the most of their remaining vision.

The assessment goes beyond a standard eye exam and includes specialized testing for reading ability, contrast, lighting needs, and how vision affects daily tasks. The goal is to find practical solutions such as visual aids, technology, and strategies to improve quality of life. Low vision care is about function, not just eye numbers.

What is Low Vision?

Low vision means reduced vision that cannot be fully corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. It can make everyday activities like reading, recognizing faces, or moving around safely more difficult.

Low vision is not the same as blindness, and many people still have useful vision with limitations. Low vision can also affect contrast, depth perception, your peripheral vision. With the right care and support, people with low vision can continue to live active and independent lives.

Macular degeneration progression.

Early macular degeneration care focuses on protecting vision and slowing progression. Healthy habits matter, including eating leafy green vegetables, maintaining a balanced diet, staying active, and protecting your eyes from UV exposure.

For some people, supplements containing lutein and zeaxanthins may be recommended to help reduce the risk of progression. Treatment plans are always personalized, and regular eye exams help guide the right approach.

What is Macular Degeneration?

It affects the central part of the retina referred to as the macula, and can advance as retinal deposits called drusen develop. Presence of drusen increases the risk of AMD advancing.

While there is no cure, early detection and monitoring help protect vision for as long as possible, making regular eye exams essential.

February marks macular degeneration awareness month. Have you heard of this retinal condition?

There are different typesof AMD.

Some types progress very slowly like the dry form, while others need closer follow up and treatment like the wet form. We have specialized scans and tests to track changes, sometimes before symptoms are noticeable.

Staying informed and attending regular eye exams helps protect and conserve your vision before you notice any symptoms.

Some people are at higher risk, including those with a family history of glaucoma, higher eye pressure, thinner optic nerves, increasing age, or certain medical conditions. Because glaucoma is complex, no single number or symptom tells the whole story. Eye doctors use several tests over time to assess risk and watch for progression.

This is why regular eye exams are so important, even if your vision feels normal.

October is Contact Lens Safety Month, the perfect time to check in on your lens habits!

Tip #4: Always wash and dry hands fully before handling lenses. This reduces the risk of infection and bacteria that can transfer onto the lens. This improves lens hygiene, comfort, and wear time.

Contacts are a convenient, glasses-free option, but proper hygiene and regular eye exams are key to keeping your eyes healthy and clear. ✔️

Book your comprehensive eye exam today and explore your best vision options with us. 👓📆
