Heart Transplant Home Society

Heart Transplant Home Society The Heart Transplant Home Society (HTHS) provides affordable housing for out-of-town patients who have had a heart transplant in the city of Vancouver, BC.

FACT: Vancouver is the only city in all of British Columbia that performs organ transplants. FACT: Those who live outside of the Lower Mainland are responsible for finding accommodations for themselves and their caregiver(s), for a period of 3 months or until they have been cleared by their transplant team to return home. This would normal cost a couple approx $10,000. Or more for the 3 month period. If this requirement is not met, the patient may be delayed in receiving their transplant and subsequently, at risk of not receiving a heart in time. FACT: Patients who are at the point where an organ transplant is necessary, are often on disability or not working enough to be able to afford their existing rent or mortgage and a hotel room stay for their recovery. For over 19 years, the Heart Transplant Home Society (HTHS) has been operating 2 heart homes in the vicinity of St. Paul’s Hospital providing affordable accommodations to heart transplant patients and their caregiver(s). To date, we have housed over 212 patients. Removing the financial stress from the patient and their families is our top priority. This is especially important to ensure the life of both the heart being transplanted and of the patient. All Members, including our active Board of Directors, are volunteers. 97% of every dollar raised is designated to the homes and to support heart patients and their caregivers. It is our intent in 2015 to open a 3rd home to accommodate more patients.

Re: Heart Homes 2025 Online Auction

On behalf of the Heart Transplant Home Society (HTHS) and the patients and caregivers we serve, thank you for participating in our fourth annual online auction, Heart Homes 2025.

Our fourth annual Heart Homes Online Auction and Donation Drive has brought in over $18,000, and we are so grateful to you for helping us reach this milestone.

Since its inception in 2002, the HTHS has offered affordable accommodation to heart transplant recipients and their caregivers from outside the Lower Mainland while they are recovering from transplant surgery. In the past few years, the HTHS has expanded to offer accommodation to VAD recipients in need as well. To date, we have been able to assist over 250 patients and families during their long term stays in Vancouver.

The HTHS depends on fundraisers and donations to cover the cost of rent in our two “Heart Homes” in Vancouver, and thanks to our wonderful supporters like you, the Society has been able to continue providing these much-needed homes. As a completely volunteer-run organization, over 95% of all monies raised goes directly to operating the two homes and alleviating stress on heart transplant and ventricular assist device recipients and their families.

With our deep gratitude,

Elizabeth Edward

Heart Transplant Home Society

As you may or may not know February is Heart ❤️ Month. As a person who lived with a congenital heart defect for 69 years, this is something near and dear to my heart (pun intended).

On August 2, 2019, I was very blessed to undergo a heart transplant at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC. As a result of a very special, selfless gift from my donor and their family, I am able to live a normal life.

I am currently a Board member of the Heart Transplant Home Society (HTHS) in B.C. The Board members are all volunteers and every one of us has been blessed to have received a heart transplant.

The mission of the HTHS is to supply affordable accommodation to transplant recipients, patients pre-transplant who may receive a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), and their spouse or caregiver. Post transplant, recipients are required to live in Vancouver for 3 months so that they can be closely monitored by the St. Paul’s transplant team. If they do not already live in the Lower Mainland, this is a costly venture.

The HTHS currently leases 2 fully furnished suites that are available to rent at a modest rate. Both "Heart Homes" are within walking distance of St. Paul’s Hospital. The HTHS Heart Homes offer a place of respite where recipients can find peace of mind and rest while they recover from their life-saving surgery.

It is a challenging time for small non-profits, and most charities, to fundraise. Please help us to continue operating our two homes by donating through this fundraiser. 95% of your donation goes directly to support the operation and maintenance of these Homes. Every dollar counts, please use the link below to donate to the cause.
