CBR PI Dr. Jayachandran Kizhakkedathu is among the UBC professors who developed enzymes that successfully convert a kidney to universal type O for transplant.

A world first: UBC Medicine researchers have helped achieve the first successful test of a kidney transplant converted to universal blood type O. https://bit.ly/4o0JHBp

The first-in-human test used special enzymes developed by UBC professors Dr. Jayachandran Kizhakkedathu (UBC Centre for Blood Research) and Dr. Stephen Withers (UBC Chemistry) to convert a kidney from blood type A to universal type O.

The organ functioned without signs of hyperacute rejection, offering hope for faster, more compatible transplants.

The breakthrough could save lives and help thousands of patients get kidney transplants sooner—especially for type-O patients who often wait years longer for a match.
