March is Lymphedema Awareness Month. ✳️

Lymphedema is swelling caused by a buildup of lymph fluid when the lymphatic system cannot drain properly. It may occur after cancer treatment, infection, injury, chronic venous disease, or other medical conditions. In some cases, kidney disease can also contribute when the body has difficulty managing fluid balance.

Proper fitting, compression therapy, and ongoing care can help manage symptoms and improve comfort.

Macdonald’s has certified fitters on staff and offers a range of compression garments and support products to help patients living with lymphedema.

If you are experiencing swelling that does not go away, it may be worth speaking with a healthcare professional.

Kidney disease does not always cause symptoms early on, which is why awareness and regular monitoring are important. 👨🏻‍⚕️🔎

Possible signs of kidney problems can include changes in urination, swelling, fatigue, high blood pressure, or changes in blood test results. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or a family history of kidney disease may have a higher risk and should be monitored regularly.

Healthy habits, regular checkups, and careful medication review all play an important role in protecting kidney health.

At Macdonald’s, our renal pharmacy services support patients living with kidney disease across British Columbia, working closely with specialists to help ensure treatments remain safe and effective.

Supporting patients with kidney disease is a core part of what we do at Macdonald’s Prescriptions, including through our dedicated Renal Pharmacy services and partnership with BC Renal.

Some medication changes don’t feel dramatic — but over time, they can matter.

Missed doses. Late refills. Small timing shifts. Adding something new without mentioning it.

Most aren’t emergencies. But consistency plays a bigger role than many people realize.

That’s why thoughtful check-ins are part of good care. 💚

Today is Rare Disease Day.

While individual conditions may be uncommon, living with one is not rare for the individuals and families navigating it every day.

Many rare conditions involve complex medication plans, specialist coordination, and careful monitoring.

At Macdonald’s Prescriptions, we support patients with thoughtful medication reviews, continuity of care, and conversations that help make complex plans clearer.

Because behind every prescription is a person, and rare doesn't mean alone. 🩷

Preventative care isn’t only for when something feels wrong.

Many medication-related issues begin as small shifts — subtle patterns over time.

A simple check-in can help confirm doses, timing, and interactions are still working the way they should.

At Macdonald’s Prescriptions, we don’t wait for problems. We notice patterns.

It all starts with asking questions. 💚

✨ November Recap: A Month of Giving Back to the Community ✨

November is always a big month for community health in Vancouver — and we were honoured to show up in support of the organizations doing life-changing work.

🩺 VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Vitality Gala – November 1

Jeff and Michelle attended on behalf of our team, proudly supporting as Bronze Sponsors.

The Vitality Gala fuels life-saving research, innovation, and patient care at Vancouver’s leading hospitals — places our patients rely on every single day.

🫁 Kidney Foundation: Living Donor Circle of Excellence – November 13

Michelle attended this inspiring event celebrating living organ donors and the medical teams who make kidney transplants possible.

Macdonald’s is proud to be an official member of the Living Donor Circle of Excellence — meaning if any Macdonald’s employee chose to become a living organ donor, their recovery time would be financially covered.

🥜 Festivus for FAIT – November 20

Mike and Michelle attended as Bronze Sponsors for this fundraiser in support of the FAIT (Food Allergy Immunotherapy) Program.

This event helps accelerate the mission to study the implementation of safe and standardized food immunotherapy protocols in the real world, a mission that Macdonald's is proud to be a part of.

💙 Why We Show Up

Our History

Founded by Austin and Vans Macdonald, two pharmacist brothers from Nova Scotia, the first Macdonald’s store was located inside the newly established Georgia medical and dental building at 925 West Georgia. Due to the company’s growing success, the Macdonald brothers opened a second store in the 1960s inside the new Fairmont medical building at 746 West Broadway.

Vince Zuccaro, the current owner, first started working at the company as a staff pharmacist at the Fairmont store in 1974 at the age of 23. In 1985, Vince and Tony Fera bought the store from the Macdonald’s. By this time, Macdonald’s was the largest distributor of goverment prescribed vaccines across BC. In 1988, Vince renovated his 2000 square foot store and expanded its retail space. Thanks to the extra floor space, the company was able to begin stocking basic medical supplies, including compression stockings and basic daily living aids.

In 1990, the company was able to help the Kidney Dialysis Service in distributing Eprex to the 342 renal patients in BC that were being prescribed that drug. Today, 28 years later, Macdonald’s Prescriptions is still dispensing and distributing Eprex and Aranesp to over 5400 patients all over British Columbia. A second location at 148 W. 6th was needed to take care of Renal Agency patients. Thanks to the hard work of Ben Lee (who recently retired in 2017), the work with the Renal Agency has been able to excel and expand. Vince’s daughter, Michelle, started working full time at this location in 2006 and along with Ben Lee have been able to expand the services provided by the Renal Pharmacy.

Over the years, we have developed and maintained a variety of outstanding services to meet the needs of patients and health care professionals. Macdonald’s Prescriptions continues to grow and flourish because of their vision and strong roots that were planted more than 90 years ago.
