Herbal medicine ? We often don’t think of sunflowers as a medicinal plant - but Helianthus annuus is used worldwide for its medicinal properties. One can use the leaves as a poultice or tea for rheumatism, fever and swelling, the seeds as a nutritive for respiratory issues and as a febrifuge, flowers for lung issues and malaria, and roots as a compress for rheumatic pain.

Katolen Yardley is a Medical Herbalist and Manual Osteopathic Practitioner in private practice in Vancouver and Port Moody, BC. She holds a degree as a Doctor of Osteopathy (EU) and is a registered herbalist with the American Herbalists Guild, the CHA of BC and the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (UK). In her private practice she offers herbal medicine consultations for any health condition one might visit a doctor for and specialises in women’s health. Custom blended herbal medicines are formulated for the unique health profile of each individual. Katolen is the current president of the Canadian Council of Herbalist’s Associations and past president of the Canadian Herbalist Association of BC for 3 terms (2013 until 2019); she is adjunct faculty at Boucher Naturopathic College, an instructor and clinic supervisor at Dominion Herbal College and a training clinic for Heartwood Education (UK). In 2016 she published the book: The Good Living Guide to Natural and Herbal Remedies. She offers herbal medicine making classes and local herb walks.
