Last month, during the conference, I attended at dinner hosted by and .
I was in awe as I listened to , , and some of our amazing colleagues in attendance speak about their experiences with amniotic membranes.
During Dr. Prosia’s presentation I had a lightbulb moment. The patient he was describing sounded exactly like one of my challenging dry eye patients. (The patient was not challenging… just the dry eye 😅)
The first slide is how the patient’s cornea has looked for the past few months.
So I chatted with Julian about how I could approach this specific case. We decided that this patient seemed like a good fit for an amniotic membrane.
Fast forward a few weeks… I placed my first amniotic membrane. It was much easier than expected (as told me it would be). To my pleasant surprise, I did not need a speculum to hold the lids open or weck-cels to dry the cornea.
The second slide shows the membrane in place. Not the smoothest placement as you can… see some wrinkles and a little off-centre.
The third slide is from earlier today, one week after placing the membrane. I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised by the results!
Who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? 😂
