What happens when patients help shape research from the very beginning?

At Can-SOLVE CKD’s 2026 Annual Meeting, patients, researchers, clinicians, and partners came together to reflect on 10 years of collaboration and the impact patient partnership has had on kidney research across Canada.

Throughout the meeting, research project teams shared examples of how patient partners have helped improve communication, support informed decision-making, and ensure research addresses the issues that matter most to people living with kidney disease and their families.

From community-led kidney screening programs to tools that help patients make informed choices about their care, one message stood out: research is stronger when patients help lead it.

Earlier this month, members of the Can-SOLVE CKD team joined patients and healthcare partners at the Alberta SPOR SUPPORT Unit’s 2026 Northwest SPOR Collaborative Forum in Edmonton.

As part of the forum theme, “People and Partnerships: Powering the Future of Health Research,” Selina Allu and patient partner Manuel Escoto co-presented:

“10 Years of Can-SOLVE CKD: Reflecting on Kidney Innovations and Impact.”

Their session reflected on a decade of patient-oriented kidney research and highlighted how collaboration, patient partnership, knowledge mobilization, and implementation support help translate research into real-world kidney care across Canada.

Selina also shared a poster presentation on reimagining the Canadian CKD Clinic Network through collaborative World Café discussions.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to meaningful conversations throughout the forum.

Last week at the Canadian Society of Nephrology AGM in Québec City, the CANA/Can-SOLVE CKD/CSN Joint Symposium brought together clinicians, researchers, health system leaders, and patient partners for an engaging discussion on disaster preparedness in kidney care.

Held during Emergency Preparedness Month, the session explored how kidney programs can better prepare for emergencies such as wildfires, floods, and power outages, and support continuity of care for people living with kidney disease.

The session opened with a powerful patient video featuring Laura Bennett, Heather Dumka, and Michael McCormick, sharing lived experiences of navigating kidney care during emergencies. The video was moderated by patient partner Arlene Desjarlais.

🎥 Watch the 5-minute video here: https://youtu.be/QnKSZ6_TCBw?si=GB_PnYOVioqIzXCO

Across the discussion, themes of coordination, communication, and patient engagement highlighted the importance of strengthening preparedness across Canada.

The session also featured a fireside chat and an engaged audience Q&A, reflecting strong participation and discussion throughout.

👉 We invite you to watch and share the video, and reflect on the importance of patient voice in shaping care and strengthening emergency preparedness.

If you’re attending the Alberta SPOR Support Unit’s 2026 Northwest SPOR Collaborative Forum (May 12–13) in Edmonton, come say hello to the Can-SOLVE CKD team as we share two presentations happening tomorrow, May 12.

Selina Allu, Knowledge Translation Broker and Implementation Support Practitioner with Can-SOLVE CKD, will be presenting the poster “Reimagining the Canadian CKD Clinic Network: Transformative Dialogue Through the World Café Method.” This work shares insights from a multi-stakeholder World Café that brought together patients, clinicians, researchers, administrators, and national partners to reflect on strengths and co-create future directions for a more responsive, equitable, and learning-oriented kidney care system.

Selina Allu and patient partner Manuel Escoto will also co-present a 1-hour oral presentation, “10 years of Can-SOLVE CKD: Reflecting on Kidney Innovations and Impact.” This session reflects on a decade of patient-oriented kidney research through Can-SOLVE CKD, highlighting how patient partnership and network-enabled knowledge mobilization and implementation support have helped move innovations into real-world kidney care across Canada.

This year’s forum theme is “People and Partnerships: Powering the Future of Health Research,” bringing together patients, researchers, health system leaders, community organizations, and practitioners from across the health ecosystem.

Looking forward to connecting with colleagues and collaborators and sharing more about the work happening across the Can-SOLVE CKD network.
