Typically what I have found in clinic is, if a condition is excess in nature, the patient responds better to acupuncture and if it’s a condition of deficiency (deficient Qi, blood or body fluids) the patient needs to supplement with herbs as well. It actually takes energy for your body to respond to acupuncture, so if you’re already depleted and don’t add herbs to help nourish, the process is slower and potentially ineffective. Excess conditions can include: heat, pain, rapid heart rate and stress. Deficient conditions can include: irregular mentruation, dizziness, slow pulse, pale and itchy rashes and night sweats. There’s often a combination of deficiency and excess and finding the correct diagnoses is complicated but this can give you an general understanding of when herbal medicine can be useful.
