Home can either make communication easier or much harder, often without anyone meaning to.

When routines are clear, conversations are structured, and tools are built together, people with aphasia spend less energy coping and more energy connecting.

Support is not about speaking for someone. It is about creating conditions where their voice can come through.

Many parents worry that involving their child in IEP meetings will feel overwhelming or stressful.

From a developmental and communication perspective, the opposite is usually true.

When students are gradually included in these conversations, they learn how to understand their learning profile, explain their needs, and use supports independently. These are executive function and language skills that directly predict success in high school, post-secondary settings, and adult life.

Students who are never included often leave school without knowing how to advocate. They rely on others to speak for them, feel unsure asking for help, and struggle when formal supports decrease.

IEP participation will teach them how their brain works and how to communicate that to others.

At Mercury Speech & Language, we treat this as real-world communication training. It is one of the most valuable life skills we can support.

If your child is between 12 and 17 and has never participated in their IEP, it is not too late. With preparation and support, this can be a positive and empowering experience.

Save this post if you are preparing for an upcoming meeting.

If you forget things that matter to you, it does not mean you do not care, and it does not mean you are irresponsible. It usually means that working memory is overloaded and didn't fully process the information. Working memory is the brain’s small holding space for information you need right now, and it gets smaller when you are stressed, tired, juggling too many inputs, or switching tasks all day. When everything depends on remembering, something will drop, even when you are trying hard.

What helps is building reliable cues into the environment so recall is triggered automatically rather than requiring constant mental tracking. You can place medication beside your toothbrush so the routine prompts the action, you can put bills or paperwork on your keyboard so you cannot start work without seeing them, and you can place returns by the door so leaving the house becomes the reminder. These supports are not “crutches,” and they do not make you dependent. They make the system contain dependencies, and that is exactly what many adults need in order to feel competent and steady again.

For many people, it’s more accessible, consistent, and personalized.
It fits around school, work, and caregiving. And it brings therapy into the place where progress matters most: home.

Self advocacy is a skill that should start early because when kids can say what they need for the small stuff, they will be confident when advocating for their needs or setting boundaries for the big stuff. Enrolling now for our spring break self advocacy group for kids in Burnaby!

Kids who don’t know how to speak up when something feels wrong are more vulnerable—socially, emotionally, and physically.
In our SLP-led group, we don’t just teach kids how to express preferences. We teach them how to recognize when something feels off and how to say so in a way that gets heard and respected. (Enrolling for our Burnaby spring break group now- link in bio)

Some kids know exactly what they need… but don’t have the words to say it. Others go along with things that don’t feel right because they don’t know how to say “no,” “stop,” or “can I have a turn?” That’s what we’re working on during Spring Break in our self-advocacy group for kids.

💪We teach skills like:
Asking for help early (not after a meltdown)
Saying no without guilt
Setting boundaries with peers and adults
Recognizing and naming uncomfortable situations
Rehearsing scripts that work in real-life settings

We’re a speech-language therapy clinic in Burnaby that works with neurodivergent and neurotypical kids—and this group is great for kids who struggle with self-expression, anxiety, emotional regulation, or masking.

Meltdowns after school don’t mean your child is bad at managing emotions. Often, it means they’ve been bottling things up all day. We teach kids how to recognize stress before it explodes — and how to speak up sooner. This is what proactive communication support looks like. Message us for details.

Self-advocacy isn’t loud. It’s often quiet, intentional, and rooted in body awareness.
It might sound like:
✔ “I don’t like that.”
✔ “Can I take a break?”
✔ “That’s too much noise.”
✔ “Can I try it a different way?”

These are the kinds of communication skills we teach—because they protect kids and help them grow.

Sign up now for our Spring Break self-advocacy group for kids. We’re accepting a limited number of participants.
