Street Saviours Outreach Society (SSOS) is a registered Non-Profit Organization under the BC Societies Act and operates as a secular, grass-roots, volunteer-run outreach organization that has been operating nightly outreach patrols in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver since 2017. We provide outreach, harm-reduction supplies, naloxone , emergency first-aid and overdose response, as well as safe accompaniment, and referral to other services during nightly patrols of the streets and alleys of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside as we look to fill a critical gap left daily as other services close in the evenings. Our volunteers and leadership come from all walks of life including outreach workers, people with lived and living experience, medics who are certified and/or licensed EMRs, primary care paramedics, OFA3s, first responders and nurses, as well an anyone with a desire to take direct action in making a difference in the lives of others in the community. SSOS distributes food, drinks, small clothing and hygiene items, harm reduction supplies, and naloxone, provides wound and infection and emergency first aid to responding to overdoses, assaults, bear sprayings and other medical emergencies. We perform wellness checks, provide naloxone training, assist in reuniting missing family members, and are engaged in advocacy and actively sit on a number of municipal, community &health authority action committees. Additionally many young individuals on career paths in social work, health care and first response come to SSOS for real world experience, and in this sense we are able to provide them with valuable first hand experiences engendering sensitivity and awareness relating to working with vulnerable and marginalized populations which they will carry with them throughout their careers and which will pay dividends to the community at large.
