It’s Safe Boating Awareness Week!
From May 16-22, we’re joining the Canadian Safe Boating Council in reminding everyone to stay safe on the water and make every boating trip a safe one.
This week highlights five key boating safety messages focused on preventing the most common boating-related incidents:
🦺 Wear Your Lifejacket
Over 80% of Canadians who drown while boating were not wearing a lifejacket or were not wearing it properly.
🚫 Boat Sober
Whether it’s prescription drugs, alcohol, or cannabis, operating a vessel while impaired is dangerous and illegal.
🥶 Be Cold Water Safe
Cold water can quickly impair even strong swimmers and significantly reduce the ability to stay afloat following sudden immersion.
⚓ Be Prepared — You and Your Vessel
Ensure your boat is properly equipped, check weather conditions, carry enough fuel, and file a trip plan before heading out.
📚 Take a Boating Course
Operators of powered recreational vessels should carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card or other proof of competency.
