"When our mind is carried away by strong pain, it helps to go back to our relaxed and peaceful in-breath and out-breath. Eventually, when our painful feeling comes back, we accept it as it is, instead of letting it carry us away and make us more agitated. We don't fight the painful feeling because we know it is part of us, and we don't want to fight ourselves. Pain, irritation, and jealousy are all part of us. As they arise, we can calm them by going back to our in-breath and out-breath. Our peaceful breathing will calm those strong emotions."
-Thich Nhat Hanh (Reconciliation)

Christmas comes wrapped in lights, songs, and familiar traditions…
yet this year, it also comes carrying a quiet ache.
A piece of my soul is missing — not gone, just somewhere beyond my reach.
I smile, I decorate, I move forward with the season,
but some memories sit softly beside me,
reminding me that love doesn’t disappear with absence.
This Christmas, I honor what was,
I hold space for what is,
and I carry those I miss in every heartbeat,
knowing that some connections live forever —
even when they’re no longer seen. 🕯️🎄

Oftentimes during the holiday season, many of us become overwhelmed by thoughts and memories of our loved ones who have passed away. We experience a level of grief that can be debilitating.

But how do our deceased loved ones feel during the holidays? Do they think of us and miss us?

Of course they do. They want us to remember them fondly and to miss them, too, but they do NOT want our grief to consume our lives. They want us to find the ways to carry on until we are reunited in the Afterlife.

They also want us to enjoy spending time with family and friends who are here with us in "the living world." Especially during the holidays, when we may be feeling nostalgic and/or sad.

So, how do we self-manage our holiday grief? We allow ourselves to be joyful, doing things like holiday shopping, going to fun events, spending time with those we love, etc. We give ourselves permission to make merry, knowing that our departed loved ones want us to do so.

It is perfectly okay to shed a few tears in remembrance of our deceased loved ones, but we must do our very best not to succumb to holiday grief. We are not dishonoring or betraying those who have passed away by embracing life during the holidays.
