When I mention meditation to people they automatically say “I’m not good at it. I can’t stop my thoughts.”

Meditation isn’t about stopping thought. It’s about connecting with yourself, listening to how your body feels and mostly slowing thought down so you can observe your thoughts and feelings. Ultimately, having greater control over your behaviour.

Meditation is a practice. Much like Osteopathy. I practice Osteopathy ever working hour. Every working hour I’m practicing being a good sometimes great Osteopath. At first I was terrible at it. But over time, I’ve learned through experience, observation, and dedication how to help people to the best of my ability. Every working hour I’m practicing to be a better Osteopath then the hour before.

That’s how meditation has worked for me. At first I felt crap at it. But I was so desperate for anxiety relief that I didn’t care. Every minute I had free I would practice meditating. Sometimes I would fall asleep. Sometimes I would feel agitated. Sometimes noises would disrupt me. But one day I noticed I felt less anxiety and I was hooked. I started feeling like I was getting good at it.

I started believing I could control the anxiety. I started experiencing observation of thought instead of muddled thought soup.

The anxiety decreased so much that instead of being overwhelmed and unsure of the cause. I’ve been was able to pin point and address the cause as it comes up.

Practicing meditation has helped me take my power back. Anxiety doesn’t control me as much anymore. I can control it. I’m still not perfect at it and I probably never will be.

I don’t practice meditation to be perfect at it. I practice it because it’s one of the ways I take responsibility for my thoughts, feelings and behaviour. It’s how I remain in love myself, my life, my profession and be a better person and practitioner for the people I love and treat.

It’s really important for me to feel my emotions and be aware of how they make me feel, so that I can express them to other people.

It’s really important to me to really love myself because then I can really love other people.

Today is , but the floods in the Northern Rivers NSW, Australia has been no laughing matter. Two huge floods in one month, devastating the region as if a tsunami has ramaged it.

This is my home. It and all the people I’ve known forever and love deeply are in desperate need of our help.

Today April 1st, marks the first day of my 30 day cold plunge challenge. I will be plunging everyday this month staying in the water for 1 extra minute each day, until I reach 30 minutes. This challenge is to represent the fear, trauma and uncertainty many locals experienced, while waiting on the roof of their homes, in the rain. Watching the water rise with no reception and no idea when they would be rescued.
