Black midwives have long shaped maternity care in Canada, including here in British Columbia.

Recent research has helped bring forward the stories of midwives like Sylvia Stark in BC and Mattie Mayes in Saskatchewan, who supported hundreds of births in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Often called “baby catchers” or elder midwives, their work was rooted in African ancestral traditions and deeply responsive to the communities they served.

As childbirth became medicalized in the 20th century, midwifery was increasingly marginalized. Systemic racism disproportionately pushed Black midwives out of emerging formal systems, despite their training and experience.

Their impact, however, endures.

Today, Black midwives and birth workers continue to lead change, advocate for culturally safe care, and address inequities in maternal health outcomes across Canada.

This Black History Month, we honour their legacy and recommit to building systems grounded in equity, accountability, and community-centered care.

Values are not just statements on a wall.
They show up in the choices we make every day.

At the Midwives Association of British Columbia, our values ground how we lead, how we collaborate, and how we support midwives across the province.

As a collective voice of midwifery in BC, we are committed to:
▶ Leading with strategy and long-term sustainability.
▶ Embedding equity and anti-racism into governance and decision-making.
▶ Collaborating to strengthen the profession.
▶ Engaging members with respect and operate with transparency.

We hold ourselves accountable to these principles in how we make decisions, support our members, and show up every day. This commitment guides our work as we strengthen and advance midwifery care across BC.

January comes to a close, we take a moment to honour community, culture and belonging.

January marks Tamil Heritage Month in Canada. The first Tamils arrived in Canada in 1983 through government measures aimed at supporting people fleeing the decades-long armed conflict in Sri Lanka.

For more than 40 years, Tamil communities have helped build the Canada we know today through their courage, leadership and social commitment. From politics and health care to entrepreneurship and the arts, Tamil communities continue to enrich our society with resilience and excellence.

Canada is home to one of the largest Tamil diasporas outside Asia, and Tamil culture remains an important part of our shared identity. As we reflect on this history, we also recognize that people of Tamil descent continue to face systemic barriers.

In British Columbia, supporting diverse communities includes strengthening access to equitable, culturally safe care. Through the midwifery model of practice, families in all contexts, including newcomers to Canada, can access safe, individualized, publicly funded maternity care and connections to community programs and supports.

This work is supported through MABC’s advocacy and system-level efforts, and guided by commitments to inclusivity, anti-racism, anti-oppression, dignity, humility and ongoing learning.

Supporting a person’s choice of birth setting is essential to midwifery care.

In British Columbia, registered midwives support both planned home births and hospital births, within a regulated scope of practice.

Midwives work with each client to plan the setting that is both safest and most comfortable for their individual circumstances.

For some families, the ability to plan a home birth is a key reason they choose midwifery care. Others choose midwifery care for a hospital birth and ongoing support.

When a home birth is planned, midwives arrive with the clinical supplies needed to safely support labour at home. This includes essential birth supplies, medications, and sterile equipment.

Midwifery care is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves access to respectful, comprehensive maternity care, regardless of their circumstances.

Meet Ams who is redefining midwifery care with compassion and inclusivity:

"As a q***r and non-binary midwife, I hope to provide safer, respectful, and welcoming spaces for other q***r and trans people choosing to have children. This call deepened as my chosen families began growing. Midwifery is an especially community based and client centered approach to reproductive health care, and it called out to me as a way to provide evidence-based care in a supportive and liberatory framework. Midwifery has been all this and more.”
