Midwives are a lifeline for rural and remote communities. They ensure families can receive essential, skilled maternity care close to home, bridging critical gaps in the healthcare system.

This past year, our Rural Midwifery Locum Program supported 41 midwives, providing 639 days of coverage across 21 rural communities. This reduces burnout for local midwives and ensures that birthing people have access to consistent, qualified care, no matter where they live.

We are committed to strengthening and sustaining midwifery in every corner of British Columbia.

Ensuring the highest standard of care is at the core of what the MABC does. This past year, the MABC coordinated 84 Midwifery Emergency Skills Program (MESP) sessions with UBC / CPD across the province.

These vital sessions supported the recertification of 208 midwives, reinforcing their ability to provide safe, skilled, and responsive maternity care in any situation. This commitment to ongoing education is fundamental to the health and safety of families in BC.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we remember the children who never came home, the survivors of residential schools, and the families and Nations who carry this truth every day.

Reconciliation is not one day, it is a daily responsibility. Birth is a place where healing begins, where culture, kinship, and community strength are carried forward. Protecting these traditions, supporting Indigenous families, and dismantling systemic barriers in healthcare are all part of this ongoing work.
May we move forward together with love and accountability, for the ancestors, the children, and the generations yet to come.

As virus season approaches, it's important to consider RSV protection for newborns. Expecting parents have options to help safeguard their babies against the virus.

One option is a vaccine for pregnant people. This vaccine protects both the pregnant person and their baby from RSV, starting from birth. The antibodies produced are passed to the baby, offering essential protection during their most vulnerable first few months of life.

Here's what you should know about the vaccine:

Purpose: Protects your baby after birth.
Timing: Administered between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.

Safety: It is an inactivated (non-live) vaccine that has been tested for safety during pregnancy.

Cost: Available at select pharmacies, with an approximate cost of $300.

Contact your midwife to see if this is the right choice for you and your family.
