We will be adding this book to our library ASAP. It is a children’s book inspired by the author’s daughter, who is a gestalt language processor. It is a neurodiversity-affirming story that celebrates the many beautiful ways kids communicate.

It’s free right now on Apple Books and also available on Kindle

We are often asked about what we think about visual schedules. Speech language pathologists tend to be big fans of visual schedules, but we also recognize that it can be very hard for families to design one and then use it in a consistent way. Many families will give up on the visual schedule because it hasn’t been designed in a way that takes the child and the child’s household activities into account. The best schedule is one that is simple and easy to use.

💬 This month, we’re shining a light on the importance of early identification and support—from first words to fluent conversations.
👂 Whether it’s helping a preschooler say their first sentence, supporting a child who stutters, or guiding adults through communication recovery, we’re here for every step of the journey.
📅 Throughout May, we’ll be sharing:
✅ Communication tips for families
✅ Red flags to watch for in speech and hearing development
✅ Spotlights on the amazing work of our SLPs

One of our favorite parent questions to answer is “Should I read to my child?” YES, yes, yes! There are so many ways to read a book. We don’t often encourage parents to start at the beginning of the book and read the book as it was written by the author if they are wanting to use the book to work on a language goal. Instead, we will suggest that parents talk less. It is more helpful to look at a page together and take turns pointing at something on the page. Label what you are pointing at or describe what it is doing. By talking about what your child is noticing on the page you will encourage some great language development. How do you read to your child?

This is such a tough question. It depends is never the answer that we want to give parents but it is true. It depends. It depends on how complex the communication delay is, it depends on how frequent the therapy sessions are, the age of the child and how much practice can happen at home.
