Liana Yip, Registered Clinical Counsellor

Liana Yip, Registered Clinical Counsellor Registered Clinical Counsellor located in Vancouver, BC Welcome! We believe that healing includes mental, physical, conscious, and unconscious levels.

The Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung said, “I must also have a dark side if I am to be whole,” wholeness comes from the acknowledgement of the parts of ourselves that we like, and those parts that we may be uncomfortable with. Most of the time it is easiest to push the darker parts of ourselves aside. We put these parts in a box in the back of our minds, triple padlock it, and voila! We have outsmarted our emotions, we get back to everyday life and forget all about it. Unfortunately these locked away parts of ourselves can grow in potency until the box you put them in explodes. When we ignore these parts of ourselves they can manifest in debilitating anxiety, depression, anger, and unhealthy projection onto our relationships and communities. When we allow the darker parts of ourselves to surface, we give them room to breathe, they are less potent and can be integrated into our whole Selves. In fact, when integrated, these aspects can positively affect our relationships and the way we interact with the world, we experience shifts such as greater self-worth, confidence, clarity, trust, improved communication, and increased creativity. It is our wish that here you will find the space you need to heal, grow, integrate, and become the person you are meant to be.

A little reminder from poet Mary Oliver:

You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -over and over announcing your place in the family of things.

Poem: Wild Geese Mary Oliver

Often we focus on our inner critical voices, the protective defenders of vulnerability.
What if we asked the parts of psyche who are supportive to come forth?
How have these inner allies shown up in your life?
How can we connect with these inner figures when needed?

Bluebird days, avalanches, snowstorms, and everything in between. You are invited to check in with what the felt sense of a mountain is.

Where do you feel the sensation of the Mountain in your body? How does this shift the way you feel the different weather systems around you?

Did you set a boundary that felt risky? Have you triggered someone by letting your voice be heard? Are you following an inner compass that has broken projections and expectations that feel misaligned?

Guilt can be a lot of things. While guilt can connect us with an ethical and moral compass, guilt can also be affirming of acting in support of oneself, of honouring the process of claiming more autonomy and choice and becoming more authentically aligned with who we are.

Guilt can mirror back to us our courage in taking the necessary steps to inhabit ourselves.

What does it mean to root down to rise up?

We need stability in order to rise, expand, and reach outward. We need dark, nutrient rich soil from decomposition in order to grow upwards into the light. We need deep roots in order to weather storms.

What does sinking your root system into dark soil mean for you?

What would it mean to allow your roots to connect with the root systems of others?

When others are not conscious of, able to connect with, or take ownership for their emotions they don’t disappear they have to go somewhere. Oftentimes, they land on those who have an increased capacity to feel. Whether this sensitivity be through innate personality traits, early messaging to be attuned to other’s emotions, trauma, or any number of other influences, highly sensitive people are thought to make up about 20- 30% of the population.

We can take on emotions and psychological states from individuals, groups, and the collective at large. To build our capacity to discern what is ours or not, we can take time and space and ask ourselves: Is how I am feeling, really how I am feeling?

Journaling, time in nature, meditation, exercise all are ways to reconnect with ourselves. Connecting with the people, activities, and inner parts that remind us of who we are apart from the noise can be supportive.

Relational transitions, work transitions, mid-life transitions. Collective transitions, cultural, political, and economic transitions. Are we ever not in multiple transitional spaces?

The liminality of these spaces can be scary, grief ridden, and disorienting. They also hold the hope and potential for re-alignment, reclamation, and remembering ourselves and what is important.

As we navigate the crossing of the rivers of change we encounter, what qualities (safety, courage, joy, presence etc.) would we do well to connect with? Who or what can remind us of these qualities?

What rivers are you approaching? crossing? On the other side of?

Our Story

Hello! My name is Liana, I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors and hold a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology from Adler University. My love of learning has led me to North America’s foremost institute for the study of depth psychology, Pacifica Graduate Institute, where I am currently completing doctoral studies in depth psychology, specializing in Jungian and archetypal studies.

I have been immersed in the study and practice of psychology for the past twenty years. Fuelled by a curiosity of human experience and cultural dynamics, in 2000 I began undergraduate studies in psychology and sociology at the University of Victoria.

After graduating in 2004, I held numerous positions both at home and abroad, including work with homeless youth, individuals with developmental disability, and su***de prevention/ crisis intervention with the Vancouver Crisis Centre.

I embarked on my graduate studies in counselling psychology in 2009. While western models of psychology interested me, somatic and creative practices such as yoga and dance had been vital on my own journey. Driven by a call to understand the benefits of yoga more fully, In 2010 I travelled to India to study with Yogi Sividas at the Kailash Tribal School of Yoga. Upon my return I was drawn to study Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, which provides a unique context to explore the depths of the psyche. I am a Registered Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance and have taught yoga at numerous locations throughout Vancouver.
