Staying warm during winter is essential for preserving your energy and protecting your health. The colder months are a time to nourish the body and focus on warmth, both inside & out.

โ„๏ธ TCM Tips for Staying Warm:

1. Sip on Ginger Tea: Fresh ginger tea is perfect for warming the body from inside out and improving circulation (especially if you add honey).

2. Cook Warming Meals: Use warming spices like cinnamon, garlic, and ginger in your cooking. Soups and stews are great choices for retaining warmth and nourishing your energy.

3. Enjoy Bone Broth: A TCM favourite for its deeply nourishing properties, it's packed with nutrients that warm and strengthen the body.

4. Keep Your Neck Warm: Don't forget to protect your "Wind Gate" at the back of your neck! Wearing a scarf protects this sensitive area from cold drafts and helps keep the body's defenses strong.

Embrace the season with comfort and care. ๐Ÿค

โ„๏ธ Embrace the Energy of Winter โ„๏ธ

Now that the Winter Solstice has passed, the season of deep yin energy is fully here. In TCM, Winter is a time for rest, stillness, and reflection, as we conserve energy and nourish the Kidneys, the source of our vital energy (Jing), making it the perfect time to recharge and nurture ourselves deeply.

โœจ How to Align with the Season:

Rest & Recharge: Prioritize quality sleep and restore practices like meditation.
Nourish your Kidneys: Enjoy warming foods like bone broth, black sesame, and walnuts.
Stay Warm: Protect your lower back and feet from the cold to preserve your energy.
Reflect: Use this time to journal! Set intentions and let go of what no longer serves you.

Winter reminds us to slow down, embrace stillness, and prepare for growth. โ„๏ธ

๐Ÿ‚ Emotional Release in TCM: Embracing Fall's Letting-Go Energy ๐Ÿ‚

In our recent posts, we explored the importance of breathing exercises and Lung health in Fall. Building on those insights, let's dive deeper into how TCM views balance. Connected to the Lungs and the Metal element, Fall embodies the process of letting go-whether it's thoughts, emotions, or habits. Much like the trees shed their leaves, Fall invites us to release what no longer serves us, making space for new growth and balance.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips for Emotional Wellness This Fall:

* Reflective Journaling: Set aside a few minutes to write down thoughts or emotions you're ready to release. This practice can offer mental clarity and emotional relief.

* Breathing Exercises: Deep, purposeful breathing not only supports Lung health but also promotes a sense of calm and centeredness. (check our previous post for a breathing exercise!)

* Intentional Reflection: Spend quiet moments focusing on gratitude and mindfulness. Acknowledge anything weighing you down and visualize releasing it with each exhale.

As we continue to align with the season's energy, give yourself permission to let go and find balance within. Embrace the clarity and freedom this seasonal shift offers. ๐Ÿƒ โœจ

๐Ÿ‚ Breathing Exercises for Lung Health in Fall ๐Ÿ‚

In TCM, Fall is associated with the Lungs, which play a key role in respiratory health and the immune system. Deep breathing exercises can help strengthen Lung function, clear mind, and release tension.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Simple Breathing Exercise:

1. Sit or stand comfortably with your back straight.
2. Breathe slowly while placing your right hand on the belly and the left hand on your chest.
3. Relax any tension in the body.
4. Inhale deeply through the nose while expanding your belly. Allow your chest and ribs to expand as well.
5. Exhale through the mouth while contracting the belly.
6. Repeat for at least 9 cycles.

This exercise not only strengthens the lungs but also helps balance emotions and support mental clarity. As the Fall brings cooler, drier air, take a moment each day to breathe deeply, nurture your body, and stay grounded through the seasonal changes. ๐Ÿ‚

๐Ÿ‚ Fall & Lung Health in TCM ๐Ÿ‚

As we enter Fall, the focus shifts to the Lungs, which is associated with the Metal element. The Metal element governs clarity, organization, and the ability to let go, aligning perfectly with the transitions of the seasons.

๐Ÿ Tips for Lung Health This Fall:

Stay Warm: The cool, dry air can weaken the Lungs, so wear layers and avoid cold drinks.

Eat White Foods: Pears, radishes, turnips and cauliflower help nourish the Lungs and protect against dryness & help with phlegm. (check out our previous post for a pear recipe!)

Incorporate Breathing Exercises: Deep, mindful breathing helps strengthen Lung function and increase vitality.

Moisturize from the Inside: Keep the Lungs and skin hydrated by eating foods in healthy fats, like avocados and almonds.

๐ŸŒถ๏ธ Pungent is the Taste of the Lungs:

Incorporating pungent foods like garlic, onions, and ginger can help open the Lungs and support their function.

๐Ÿณ Cooking Methods for Metal Season:

During this season, focus on boiling, steaming, and making stews to retain warmth and moisture in foods, which helps support the Lungs. Itโ€™s best to eat fewer cold, raw salads and opt for warming, cooked meals that are easier on the digestive system.

Strengthen your Lungs with Fall and embrace the season with balance and vitality!

๐Ÿฒ Butternut Squash Soup with Miso ๐Ÿฒ

Since we're on the topic of Late Summer and Spleen health, let's dive into a recipe that's perfect for this season! Nourish your Spleen with this creamy, comforting butternut squash soup, enhanced with the umami of miso and the richness of coconut milk. Ideal for supporting digestion and boosting energy in TCM.

Ingredients:
- 1 medium sized butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cubed.
- 1 tbsp olive oil.
- 1 onion, chopped.
- 2 garlic cloves, minced.
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated.
- 1 can (400ml) coconut milk.
- 3 cups broth of your choice (or just water).
- 2 tsp yellow miso paste.
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon.
- Salt and pepper to taste.
- Fresh herbs (like cilantro or parsley) for garnish.

๐Ÿฒ Instructions:
1. Sautรฉ the Aromatics: In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic and grated ginger. Sautรฉ until the onion is translucent, about 5mins.

2. Add the Squash: Stir in the cubed butternut squash and ground cinnamon. Cook for another 2-3mins, allowing the spices to infuse the squash.

3. Simmer: Pour broth (or water) and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and let it simmer for about 20-25mins, or until squash is tender.

4. Blend: Use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth. Alternatively, transfer the soup in batches to a blender.

5. Add Coconut Milk and Miso: Stir in the coconut milk and miso paste. Heat the soup gently, but do not boil, to preserve the beneficial enzymes and probiotics of the miso. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt & pepper.

6. Serve: Ladle the soup into bowls & garnish with fresh herbs. Enjoy this warm & nourishing soup, perfect for supporting your Spleen which will help eliminate phlegm and dampness!

๐Ÿ’› The Fifth Season: Late Summer ๐Ÿ’›

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, "Late Summer" is considered the fifth season, a transition period between summer (which is more yang energy) and autumn (which is more yin energy). This season is all about nurturing the Spleen and Stomach, which is crucial for digestive health and overall energy.

๐Ÿ’› Tips for Late Summer:

Start Eating Warm, Cooked Foods: Strengthen your Spleen with soups, stews, and lightly cooked vegetables.

Yellow Foods: Incorporate foods like sweet potatoes, corn, lemon and millet.

Avoid Dampness: Limit cold, greasy, raw foods, and sugary drinks.

Mindful Eating: One of the most important things to do for the Spleen/Stomach's health is eating at regular times and chewing thoroughly. Avoid eating when stressed or distracted.

๐Ÿ’› Why the Spleen?

In TCM, each organ has a season, the season for the Spleen is Late Summer. The Spleen is vital for transforming food into Qi (energy) and nourishing the body. A strong Spleen means better digestion, balanced energy level, and smooth transition into Autumn.

Take care of your Spleen this Late Summer to stay balanced and healthy as the seasons change!
