Today is the National Day of Action on Planetary Health.

In BC, we know the realities of climate change, from wildfires to floods and the health risks they bring. We also know our health system has an opportunity to reduce its environmental impact.

At Health Quality BC, we are advancing environmentally sustainable, high-quality clinical care by:
✅ Working with those who deliver care and system leaders to reduce emissions.
✅ Supporting shifts in clinical practice that align with planetary health.
✅ Grounding this work in evidence, shared learning and collaboration.

A healthy environment supports healthy people and communities. By making sustainability a core part of high-quality care, we can shape a health system that cares for both people and the planet.

Today is National Seniors Day.

Whether a parent, a co-worker, a neighbour or a friend, it's a day to celebrate the older adults in our lives and the valuable contributions they make to our communities. It's also an opportunity to reflect on how older adults receive quality health care.

Our population is aging, and the health system faces increasing pressure to meet complex and changing needs. These pressures make it all the more important to ensure seniors receive safe, high-quality care that supports their independence. Without the right supports, hospital stays can sometimes lead to hospital-associated deconditioning (HAD) and frailty, which affect up to 65% of seniors and can reduce physical and cognitive health, confidence and quality of life.

On November 19, 2025, we are hosting a Virtual Co-Design Event to bring together:
✔ Patients and families with lived experience
✔ Clinicians at point-of-care
✔ Those supporting seniors in hospital or community

By sharing perspectives and experiences, participants will help shape practical actions that support seniors during hospital stays.

Tomorrow is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. It is a time to reflect on what these days of recognition mean, and to acknowledge that in Canada we are not immune to racism. Much more work is needed to eliminate Indigenous-specific racism and advance true reconciliation in BC and across Canada.

While progress has been made since the release of the In Plain Sight report five years ago, reconciliation will only be possible when we acknowledge the lasting impacts of residential schools and take tangible actions that embed cultural safety and humility in health care and in society as a whole.

We encourage everyone to take this opportunity, tomorrow and beyond, to reflect, learn and act in ways that contribute to lasting change.

Truth and Reconciliation are powerful words, but too often, their power is diminished when they become buzzwords, spoken without the depth of action and accountability they demand.

Read our blog post that explores the DEPTH framework, which offers a way to maintain the transformative power inherent to the concepts of Truth and Reconciliation.

Every year on September 30, we recognize and honour Orange Shirt Day as part of our ongoing commitment to cultural safety and humility and reaffirm our pledge to actively resist Indigenous-specific racism.

While wearing orange on September 30 reminds us of the ongoing impacts of residential schools, it has also become a symbol of hope, ongoing healing and reconciliation. It reminds us that Every Child Matters and honours the experience of Indigenous Peoples.
