An RMT in British Columbia recently created a new federal petition to gather further support for HST/GST exemption for massage therapy in Canada.

This petition is sponsored by MP Brad Vis, who has previously championed similar exemption petitions directed towards the previous federal government.

A related petition, recently presented in the House of Commons by Newfoundland MP Jonathan Rowe, has already mandated a government response. Every new petition presented with maximum signatures further amplifies our collective voice and compels the government to act on this crucial issue.

NO Lectures Just Answer

You’ve asked, and I’m listening! 💬 A question I get in many forms is about sharing insurance benefits for massage—whether it’s for a spouse who doesn’t use their coverage, or a visiting family member or friend.

“My husband never uses his—can I just use his direct billing for my massage?”
“My mom is visiting and I have unlimited benefits—can I book her in under my name?”

I totally understand why this comes up! You see a benefit going unused and want to share the wellness with someone you love. It comes from a generous place.

Here’s the gentle but firm “why” behind my no:

When I direct bill to an insurance provider on your behalf, I am legally certifying that you, the policyholder or their registered dependent, received the treatment. The system is designed this way for a reason.

Submitting a claim for a different person—even with permission—is considered misrepresentation. As a regulated health professional, my license and entire career are built on integrity and following these rules to the letter. My ability to direct bill for anyone relies on this trust.

So, while I wish I could say yes to help your loved one, my hands are tied by professional regulations. I have to protect my practice so I can continue to be here for all your authentic, above-board wellness needs!

P.S. If your visiting family member has their own out-of-province coverage, I’m always happy to provide them with a detailed receipt they can submit themselves!
