Our Arab Women’s Support Group took advantage of the winter sun for a crisp outdoor trip to Granville Island! They enjoyed everything from the Aquabus to the market and its activities. This was another enriching trip, possible thanks to the generous funding and partnership with BC Parks Foundation. Their commitment to community integration, outdoors, and cultural connection has benefited hundreds of our participants over the years. We are thrilled for their continued support and initiatives.

Scroll through some of the other trips this group has taken to Shannon Falls, Burnaby Mountain, Van Dusen, Vancouver Aquarium, Fly over Canada, Cultus Lake and Golden Ears 🌳☀️🌸

💙 Hopeful Update 💙
Francisco has been accepted into palliative care with BC Cancer, where he will receive the support and treatment he needs. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has confirmed that his scheduled removal to El Salvador on February 11 has been deferred for six months, following medical confirmation that he is not fit to fly.

This outcome is the result of collective advocacy, compassion, and unwavering community support at every level. We are deeply grateful to everyone who listened, shared his story, and showed their support. You truly made a difference.

At the same time, this reminds us of the work still ahead. Please continue to share Francisco’s story, raise awareness, and speak up for care-centred, systemic change. Every voice helps ensure no one has to face a situation like this alone.

This article from The Tyee details a deeply troubling situation facing one of our patients who has advanced cancer and is unable to access ongoing treatment because his provincial health coverage lapsed when he became too sick to continue working. He now faces imminent deportation.

This is a devastating example of people falling through the gaps in current pathways to care, despite doing their best to cooperate and comply with everything asked of them. Although concerted efforts are being made by individual providers and advocates at hospitals and agencies, this highlights wider systemic challenges surrounding immigration status and access to care.

We urge the development of clearer, compassionate care pathways so that everyone can access timely, medically necessary treatment. This is a developing case as we continue to engage partner agencies and government officials, while advocating to ensure essential care is available for all.

Public health information can be hard to access if language is a barrier. That’s why we are so grateful to BC Cancer Screening and Prevention and Volentia Healthcare Translation for working with us to deliver cancer-screening workshops to diverse communities, translated in multiple languages.

Most recently, we collaborated to deliver our breast and cervical cancer-screening workshop to Farsi speakers at BNH South House. Thank you to our community partners and volunteer presenters for helping us bring this to the community!
