We often take our breath for granted, until we’re struggling. Whether it’s during stress, illness, intense exercise, or injury, we only tend to notice it when it feels difficult.

But breathing is more than just a reflex. It’s a tool for finding calm in stress, supporting recovery from illness, improving performance in exercise, and easing pain from injury.

Instead of letting difficulty control your breath, let your breath guide your response.

Breathing is something we all do, yet, it is so overlooked, undervalued and misunderstood.

We take around 20,000 breaths a day, but how often do we stop to think about how we’re breathing or if we’re even doing it well? So many people struggle with breathing and search for answers only to find misinformation or even worse, no solution.

Before I started OptiBreathe, I was searching too. I wanted to understand why so many people were struggling, however, the resources out there weren’t enough or they were difficult to find.

Throughout my pursuit to finding the answers, I discovered breathing was more than just something to focus on when it becomes difficult, it’s the key to better performance and greater wellbeing. I tried to learn it all myself, but I quickly realized I don’t have all the answers and that I just need to ask the right questions to the right people.

That’s when I decided to host the OptiBreathe Show where I bring together experts, real experiences, and life-changing insights to help you breathe better in all aspects. This show isn’t just about breathing, it’s about awareness, education, and helping you be in control of something so essential to life.

If you’ve ever struggled with your breathing, felt like it’s limiting your performance, or just want to understand how your breath impacts nearly every aspect of your health—this show is for you.

📅 Mark your calendars! ⏰ The wait is almost over. Comment below on a episode on breathing that you’d like to see!

Breathe through your nose. Your nose has conditioning mechanisms to ensure that inspired air is heated to 37 degrees celcius and humidified to 100% relative humidity by the time it reaches the trachea, avoiding dry and irritated airways. It promotes both vascular and broncho dilation due to the production of nitric oxide, improving both circulation and oxygenation. These are just a few key advantages as nasal breathing offers numerous other benefits.

Practice diaphragmatic breathing. Focus on breathing horizontally rather than vertically. You want to expand 360 degrees around your lower rib cage area. This can promote a deeper breath, better oxygen exchange and reduce the risk of developing tension in the neck and shoulders due the overuse of accessory respiratory muscles.

Slow down your breathing. Studies show that a breathing rate of 6 -10 breaths per min with bigger tidal volumes is found to be optimal for improving the amount of oxygen absorbed in your blood. It also helps relax your body by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, boosting heart rate variability (HRV) and maintaining healthy body functions.

Maintain good posture. Posture can directly influence the position and movement of the ribcage, diaphragm and other respiratory muscles. Ideal postures for optimal breathing are neutral spine, relaxed shoulders, engaged core, aligned pelvis and elongated neck. Poor posture can restrict your breathing.

Exercise regularly. Regular physical activity helps strengthen the respiratory muscles, which are responsible for lung expansion, therefore, creating negative pressure that allows for air to be sucked in. Like every muscle in the body, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Any type of activities that make you huff and puff will do the job!

⁉️Did you know that breathing directly influences our brain chemistry? Deep breaths boost the production of noradrenaline, enhancing attention and improving brain health. 🧠 Afterall, our brain is one of the top consumers of oxygen in the body at 18%. Mindful breathing is key to mental clarity and focus. Breathe deeply, think clearly!

🌳 Our forests are easily mistaken as the world’s primary oxygen producers. However, the top 200 meters of the ocean’s surface produces more than half of the planet’s 🌎 oxygen through the process of photosynthesis performed by marine plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. 🌊 The ocean not only contributes oxygen to our atmosphere but also decreases the amount of carbon dioxide. Protecting our ocean is crucial for a healthier planet! 🌊💙
