My research campaign reached MSN which has a reach of 122 MILLION people.
đŸ€©Hopefully it helps some neurodivergent parents / to be out there! More to come

Research from Edith Cowan University (ECU) has called for greater recognition of the needs of neurodivergent mothers during perinatal care.

In 2022, more research added to our knowledge that it is better to wait for a while after a baby is born before clamping and cutting the umbilical cord.

We now know that it is safe to wait six minutes after birth, even when an oxytocic drug is given.

Waiting, which is sometimes called optimal or delayed cord clamping, means that the baby has the chance to get all the blood that they need from the placenta before the supply is cut.

We have known for many years that it is better to wait than to interfere, but it is taking a while for things to change in some areas.

This is because, in recent decades, there has been a tendency to interfere with birth.

But a new research study further confirms that there are advantages to waiting.

Winkler et al (2022) carried out a study in Sweden in which they compared the outcomes of 904 mother/baby pairs whose cords were clamped and cut at different times after birth.

These were the key findings:

Research shows that it is safe to wait six minutes before clamping the cord.

(It may be safe to wait longer, and many women choose to do so. But a study can only report what it researched, and six minutes was the average time in this study.)

Waiting longer doesn't increase the chance of phototherapy being needed (for jaundice).

It doesn't matter whether oxytocin is given before or after cord clamping.

I have blogged about this study at https://www.sarawickham.com/research-updates/delaying-cord-clamping/

A Thorough presentation of data from a secondary analysis of the “ARRIVE trial” that provides proof that the 39-week induction group had fewer cesareans because of how the expectantly managed group was managed.
-With optimal care, expectant management would have been much the better option.

A study analyzing the ARRIVE trial provides proof that the 39-week induction group had fewer cesareans because of how the expectantly managed group was managed.

From Heart, on country, a lullaby song.

On aboriginal land, where legends thrive,
A tale unfolds, where hearts survive.
An Aboriginal woman, brave and strong,
Embarks on a journey, unknown and long.

Amidst the trees and nature's embrace,
She carries life with steadfast grace.
A midwife walks beside her side,
Together, they face the world so wide.

An ultrasound scan, a fateful day,
Reveals a truth they can't dismay.
Anencephaly's shadow looms,
Yet she defies all impending dooms.

Culturally, she stands so tall,
Rejecting pressures, she won't fall.
For her precious babe, she'll strive,
Choosing love to keep hope alive.

Recording sounds on phones they cherish,
Their bond deepens, nothing to perish.

A "mum and baby," she yearned to be,
Not labeled by her destiny.
A Midwife from Robin Hood's realm,
Embracing her with care and helm.
Through every midwife appointment, she's there,
Guiding her with tender care.
Birthing education, a sacred quest,
Preparing her for life's behest.

Strangers try to take her away,
To a distant land, her heart won't sway.
The midwife stands firm, ethically bound,
Respecting her wishes, voices resound.

As forty-one weeks do approach,
The pressure mounts, shadows encroach.
To induce labour, they advise,
But she decides, at her own guise.

With a disjointed maternity system at bay,
The midwife fights for her voice to stay.
An advocate for her rights, she stands,
From Robin Hood's country, and across these stolen lands.

Forty-two weeks, the hour draws near,
Her birthing journey, now is clear.
An induction starts, with hopes aligned,
Yet destiny's course, they can't define.

Baby Sunshine ☀ enters the world,
As dreams and love are gently unfurled.
Surrounded by warmth and tender embrace,
He defies the odds, in that sacred space.

Five beautiful days, a precious gift,
A lifetime's love, though ever swift.
Handprints captured, hats lovingly spun,
Aunty's touch, for her precious one.

At 7 pm, on that final night,
He departs gently, out of sight.

But love remains, forever strong,
From Heart, on country, a lullaby song.

The Aboriginal woman, strong and wise,
An emblem of courage beneath these skies.

With the midwife, hand in hand,
They've left footprints in the sand.

On country, their land, their story lives,
Where bravery and love forgives.

Through life's trials and mysteries,
Their journey weaves eternal melodies.

What is a midwife

A midwife is a chameleon, a leopard with ever changing spots.
A reflection of all those we have cared for
Of who we’re with in the moment
We dress ourselves to match the room, to match you in whatever ways we need
We’re patched together in a quilt of mismatched remnants and wonky threads
A quilt we’re forever picking at, loose threads tied, unpicked, re patched, ironed, scrunched
Some bits destined for the bin, other bits tucked in corners folded just so.
A life long project that is never really finished
I’ve remade myself again and again and I will again

Midwives are a work of art, a work of heart
A strange mix of science, biology.
A vast amount of abstract knowledge that we don’t know we know, yet somehow we do.
We exist in the moment before that first breath
We look you in the eyes, for a moment it’s just us two.
‘Just one more,’ part of me in awe as you pull it from the depths
Then we’re suspended in that brief all consuming hitch of your breath, that seems to last forever
Before we all breathe again when cries ring out like church bells on wedding days.
Towels fall around you like celebratory confetti, wiping away the old as we welcome the new.

And when silence stretches fourth, we will wrap you up tight, stop the world as you prepare to say goodbye.
Drape you in kindness, smallest touch, our words feeling hollow.
A Lilly white blanket that should have seen you home
Nothing feels like it can ever be enough

We’re the hand in your photos, the touch you’ve forgotten
We’re the photographers, the faceless voice, that face you can’t quite place
That person in Tescos that looks familiar, but you’re not sure from where
We’re your advocates, your voice, the rudder in the storm

We’re the rushing feet, the jangling keys
We’re the laughers, the cryers, the jokers.
The back rub that hits just right
The chirpy cheerleader in the middle of the night
Seeing you at your best and worst
Eventually becoming a blue blurry smudge on the periphery of your memories as time passes

But just so you know, just so you’re aware
A midwife is made up of all of you
