Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects the liver and causes inflammation in this vital organ. Now a recent paper by BC researchers, including Advancing Health scientists Drs. Naveed Janjua and Ehsan Karim, finds that many benefits arise from curing HCV, extending even beyond the liver, including a lower risk of kidney, heart, stroke and neurocognitive issues.

An additional ten projects are being supported by Advancing Health Scientists as co-investigators, with a total of over $13 million in new research funding, tackling everything from the health benefits of physical to drug interventions for .

“This research shines a spotlight on a critical barrier to timely care in out of hospital cardiac arrests: the absence of a witness,” explains Dr. Brian Grunau, Advancing Health scientist and head of the Canadian Saving Cardiac Arrest Victims Everywhere (CanSAVE) research excellence cluster. “When unnoticed, the chance of surviving a cardiac arrest drops dramatically to almost zero.”

After discharge, outreach counselors are working directly with patients access information, medication, supplies and personal care.
