Ever wondered how Hashimoto’s changes your thyroid function? 🧠 Let’s dive into the science behind it!

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease, meaning that your immune system makes antibodies that attack the thyroid gland. This causes damage to the thyroid gland, resulting in low production of thyroid hormones.

Thyroid hormones control how your body uses energy, therefore affecting nearly every organ, including the heart and brain. With low levels of thyroid hormones, your metabolism slows. This leads to a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, and constipation.

Curious about how to improve your health and quality of life with Hashimoto's? Book your appointment today and start your journey toward balance and vitality! 🌿

This month, I’m going to be sharing educational content on celiac disease & how I approach this particular autoimmune disorder as a naturopathic doctor. So let’s start with the basics, what is celiac disease?

Celiac disease is a common autoimmune disorder that affects 1% of the population and can be passed down through generations. It’s triggered by the consumption of gluten-containing grains, which includes wheat, spelt, barley and rye. Gluten then causes an inflammatory cascade that damages the small intestine lining.

Over time, this inflammation can cause atrophy (or loss) of the small intestine villi. These are finger-like projections from cells of the small intestine that increase surface area. Loss of this increased surface area leads to malabsorption of various nutrients, including iron, zinc, copper, folic acid, vitamin D, vitamins B6 and B12).

Share with someone you know who has celiac disease!

Are your symptoms pointing to Lyme disease? 🤔

Once Borrelia burgdorferi spreads throughout the body, it can lead to this constellation of symptoms affecting multiple different organs:

🧠The nervous system is commonly affected, leading to severe headaches, insomnia, brain fog and difficulty concentrating.
🦵Lyme often affects the joints, creating arthritis or travelling joint pain.
🫀The development of heart rhythm disturbances is a classic late stage Lyme disease symptom as well.

If you’re suspicious of Lyme disease or are wanting to investigate this further, book a complimentary discovery call with me to learn about the testing and treatment options available. The link is in my bio ⬆️

Curious about how Lyme disease is diagnosed or what to do if you get bitten by a tick this summer? Read on!

The first step is testing any ticks that you find attached to your skin. You can put the tick in a container with a tight fitting top and your doctor can send it off to BCCDC Public Health Lab, where they will test it for Borrelia burgdorferi. This is covered under MSP. If you wanted to assess for co-infections typically associated with tick bites, you could also send it off to the private lab Geneticks, which will test for Borrelia species & other co-infections for $200.

Alternatively, if you didn’t find a tick attached to your skin and you start experiencing common Lyme disease symptoms (see my previous post), there’s a couple different test options:
✨Antibody testing (IgG and IgM) via Lifelabs can provide good information 6 weeks after a tick bite and allows for more certainty before ordering the more expensive tests.
✨Tickplex by Armin Labs is a comprehensive test that will assess exposure to tick-borne infections and other viral infections
✨Elispot by Armin Labs assess the current level of infection in the body and can be useful to track treatment efficacy

Unpopular opinion: to achieve optimal health, you actually have to BELIEVE that you can.

Have you gotten comfortable in the idea that your current state is how you’ll be forever? Have you tried “everything” and given up? Have you accepted that you have “no other options?”

Or are you open to the idea that your health can improve? Change in uncomfortable even if it’s positive change. You need to have a little glimmer of hope because hope creates a willingness to change.

Comment CHANGE if you believe that you’re capable of getting better. I believe that you can too and I would love to guide you in that process 🤍
